When you make a movie with as much buzz at Tron: Legacy, you don’t need to wait for it to hit cinemas before Hollywood will start taking you seriously for other big projects. In fact it makes sense to have something else already greenlit in case your buzzed about movie ends up flopping. Joseph Kosinksi is trying to do just that, with a remake of Logan’s Run in the works and the newly announced Oblivion, based on his own concept.
Oblivion centers on a battle-damaged soldier who, assigned to a desolate planet after a court-martial, patrols the bleak landscape in an effort to destroy the last vestiges of a primitive alien race. When a mysterious traveller arrives unexpectedly, their lives become inextricably linked as they are forced to question everything they know about this world and themselves.
It’s an idea Kosinksi began working on four years ago, and while he originally hoped it would kick-start his directing career, it’ll now come after other major movies. There are also plans to turn Oblivion into an illustrated novel to accompany the film.
Interestingly David Fincher has signed on to produce the project, which is being made by Radical Pictures.
Kosinski commented, “I was [originally] looking to make a science fiction film that I could do on a budget. It’s grown since then, but it’s intended to be a very spare science fiction film, with a small cast but big ideas and big landscapes.”
There’s no news yet on when the film might go into production.
