Pixar Does Sex – Studio animators take on sex and science in new book

29th July 2009 By Tim Isaac

It’s difficult to imagine this having happened during the classic days of Disney, but in the second of a projected four-book series, the illustrators at Pixar have decided to take on sex, in The Ancient Book Of Sex And Science (the first was The Ancient Book Of Sex And War). In the book are numerous illustrations done in a style familiar to anyone who’s seen Pixar’s high-end art books, or indeed the opening credits of some of their films.

Pixar animator Scott Morse, who did some of the pictures for the book, noted “Well, we’re usually pretty introverted, so maybe that makes us a little kinkier. And there’s a tradition of us loving Playboy cartoons and naughtier things in general. We all remember drawing in the margins of our textbooks when we were younger.”

If you want to see a few more images from the book, scoot on over to i09.com, which has scored a few of the suggestive if not exactly exclicit images.

It just goes to show what an unusual position Pixar holds, as if most animation studios made a book about sex, there’d be howls of protest (hell, enough people have looked at innocent Disney cartoons and read perversion into them), but Pixar lives in a bizarre world where it’s arty enough to get away with thisngs like this, even while every film it makes breaks the bank.
