The Box Office Becomes A Guinea Pig – G-Force wins the box office weekend in the US

26th July 2009 By Tim Isaac

Although until a couple of weeks ago, the movie G-Force looked like an utterly bizarre concoction that was destined to go down in history as an odd family movie footnote, it’s picked up steam and following its release on Friday, it’s now sitting at the top of the US box office tree with a take of $32.1 million in its first three days in cinemas.

The film, about a team of trained secret agent guinea pigs, dispatched to stop a diabolical billionaire, who plans to taking over the world with household appliances, nabbed the number one from Harry Potter 6. That movie’s weekend take more than halved to only $30 million. Although it’s a big tumble, the fact it’s taken $221 million in 10 days means it’s well on track to perform as well as the other Harry Potter movies in the US, which have generally made $250-$300 million over the course of their cinema run.

The other new entries in the top 10 were the Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler romantic comedy, The Ugly Truth, at number three, and the horror movie, Orphan, at number four. Both performed about to expectations, with The Ugly Truth chalking up $27 million and Orphan making $12.7 million.

It’s also now certain that talk of Transformers 2 hitting $500 million at the US box office was premature, however the $8 million it took over the weekend did mean it’s reached a major milestone, with its $379 million gross moving it in the top 10 movies ever at the American box office, just knocking Lord Of The The Rings: Return Of The King in 11th place.

Take a look below for the full US estimated box office for the weekend of July 24th-26th.
