I can imagine updating this website in 50 years and sayign they’ve just gone into production on Saw LVII, but the inevitable news has arrived today that work is beginning on next year’s Saw VII. It’ll presumably be getting a Halloween release next year, following this year’s October instalment, Saw VI.
Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton will write the script (they also scripted Saw IV, V and VI), while the director of Saw V, David Hackl, will once more be on directing duties (he was also production designer of Saw II to IV).
It really is getting faintly ridiculous, but Saw is the franchise that will never die, with each instalment costing little to make but racking up massive numbers at the box office. It’s a real show of belief on the part of the studio that they’re ready to greenlight a seventh film before the sixth is out, but there’s little doubt they might as well start work, as there’d have to be a massive drop-off in interest for it not to be worth their while. Plus, with filming not due to begin unti January, they could always call the whole thing off if Saw VI proves to be a disaster.
We doubt that’ll happen though, so look forward to a new Saw film every year for the rest of time.
