Universal has officially announced the full line-up of special features for the UK home entertainment release of Fast & Furious on September 21st. As well as both DVD and Blu-ray releases for the film, there’ll be box sets of all four movies on both formats. The incredibly lazily titled movie reteams the stars of the first film, The Fast And The Furious – Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster – which sees Walker’s character working for the FBI and teaming up with Diesel and co. to bring down a heroin importer.
In related news from the US, Universal has announced even more interactivity attached to the Blu-ray of Fast & Furious, as it’ll be one of their first films to try and harness the power of the iPhone and iPod touch. The idea is that for some of their films, when you buy the Blu-ray you’ll also be able to download apps for your iPhone, which will, for example, allow you to use the Apple device like a remote control, as well as being able to access additional features on their mobile device.
For example, the Blu-ray of Fast & Furious will come with a BD-Live feature called ‘Virtual Car Garage’. Whereas anyone with a player attached to the Internet can get that, if you have an iPhone, you can use the devices’ touch screen to control 360-degree views of the movie’s supercharged street-racers and instantly punch up exclusive technical specs for the film’s high-tech cars.
While all this will be up and running in the US Apple app store in time for Fast & Furious’ US DVD and Blu-ray release on July 28th, we’re not entirely certain yet if they’ll be bringing it to the UK. Like many of the heavily touted Blu-ray interactive features, this doesn’t exactly sound that thrilling, but it’s a good indicator of what might be possible in the future and different devices start to work together in ever more clever ways.
