It was almost inevitable that following the success of Transformers 2, there’d be more talk of bringing Voltron (and just about every other 80s cartoon) to the silver screen. After the release of the first Transformers movie, a Voltron flick was planned, with a script written by Justin Marks, but the whole project fell into oblivion before it could get before the camera.
With the second Transformers movie having cleaned up at the box office, it’s now being reported that Atlas Entertainment has nabbed the screen rights to Voltron from the Mark Gordon Company. They’re hoping to turn the 80s cartoon into a massive budget movie, although they’re still likely to come up against the same problems as the previous attempt, which is that it’d cost a huge amount to make a Voltron flick, but the cartoon doesn’t have as big a built-in audience as the likes of Transformers.
In fact we wouldn’t be surprised if many of you don’t know what the hell Voltron is. Well, it’s basically like Power Rangers, but in cartoon form and with a far more complex mythology. It follows the Galactic Alliance’s brightest young things, who each have Lion robots that can combine into the mightest battle robot in the universe – Voltron.
It could make a very cool movie, but we wouldn’t be surprised if after much intial talk, this one sinks back into development hell.
