Paramount Home Entertainment is the US has announced a rather nifty sounding bonus feature for the DVD and Blu-ray release of Star Trek. On the cover of the release will be a visual cue, which means people will be able to hold their disc packaging in front of a webcam to unlock an interactive hologram on the computer screen. You’ll then be able to tour five cabins on the Enterprise and even shoot enemies from the ship’s deck.
This ‘augmented reality’ feature will actually use the disc packaging to control the hologram. “If you took the visual cue in the package and turned your hand, then you’re turning the ship,” Paramount homevideo senior VP of brand marketing Bob Buchi said.
While we haven’t yet received confirmation that the same feature will be inclued on the UK version, it would be odd if it wasn’t.
Other special features of the UK DVD version are set to include deleted scenes, a documentary called ‘A New Vision’ and a gag reel. The Blu-ray should also include numerous other featurettes, looking at everything from the Score to the Aleins, as well as a ‘Starfleet Vessel Simulator’, which lets you explore the spaceships from the movie, and a BD-Live feature that connects you live update from Space through Nasa (a more complete list is available at Play.com).
The Star Trek DVD and Blu-ray will be out on November 2nd in the UK and on November 17th in the US.
