When it was announced a while back, Kung Fu Hustle’s Stephen Chow was going to direct the new adaptation of Green Hornet, as well as playing Kato. He was then replaced as helmer by Michel Gondry, but was still attached to play Brit Reid’s manservant, the role that made Bruce Lee famous in the 60s. However it now appears that Chow may have left the production completely as a new casting call has gone out for the role.
First reported by Spoiler TV, the maker’s put out this call, ‘[KATO] ALL ASIAN ETHNICITIES, Male, 20’s – early 40’s. Brit Reid’s manservant/chauffeur by day and Green Hornet’s martial arts-skilled sidekick by night sptv050769. Actor doesn’t have to have Martial Arts experience’.
It’s a note to cause dread in any fan’s heart, from the lack of martial arts experience necessary, to its disinterest in what country Kato actually comes from (although Hollywood is fond of lumping all Asian people into one giant ethnic block).
However they’re gonna have to get a move on as the film is due to go into production soon, for a July 2010 release.
