What is it with small rodent-y creatures this week? We’ve had raccoons with The Details and Furry Vengeance, and now a film called The Beaver has re-emerged. Kyle Killen’s script for the movie has been around for a couple of years, with Steve Carrell attached at one point and Jay Roach tapped to direct. However they both left and Jim Carrey was brought in, with him agreeing to make the movie on the condition a suitable director could be found. However it appears Carrey’s now out as well, with Jodie Foster signing on to direct and Mel Gibson being wooed to star.
The duo have been talking for years about finding another project to work together on, having had a blast with Maverick, and it seems they have now found their vehicle. Gibson will play Walter, the depressed CEO of a failing toy company, who finds a glove puppet named The Beaver. He begins to wear the puppet at all times and it becomes his main way of communicating with the world. As well as directing (Jodie’s presumably given up on her long gestating but never filmed Flora Plum movie), Foster will also play Walter’s long suffering wife.
He’ll probably give a very different interpretation to either Carrell or Carrey, but we’re kind of intrigued to see Mel in a movie where he does all his talking through a glove puppet. It could be bloody awful, but you’d have watch it anyway.
