They’ve been talking about it for years, but plans to make a Baywatch movie seem to be back on track with Paramount annoucing that they’ve hired Jeremy Garelick, scripter of The Break-Up, to write and direct a movie based on the TV show. It appears the studio is looking to turn the film into a full-on comedy, seeing it as a good bet at the box office.
“It felt like the template to do a movie that was similar to Stripes and Police Academy, the comedies I loved growing up,” Garelick said. “Rather than trying to pitch the tone, I figured it would be easier to write the first act to convey who these characters were.”
Yeah right, like anyone’s going to watch a Baywatch movie for the characters. We’re thinking that as long as they do the movie in 3D and there’s plenty of shots of buxom women running up and down a beach, that’s all anyone’s gonna want. That’s all they wanted from the TV series (minus the 3D bit). After all, it was a pretty dreadful show, other than it had a lot of pretty people (and David Hasselhoff) wearing skimpy outfits.
Apparently Garelick’s script focusses on two unlikely lifeguards trying to make it alongside the buffer bodies known from the TV show. It could be okay, but somehow we’re doubting it.
And there’s no news yet on whether The Hoff will be involved.
