Amy Adams really does like to swing from really serious projects to broad comedies with not much in between. She seems to be continuing the pattern as it appears likely she’ll star in The Fighter, David O’Russell’s new film starring Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg.
The movie is a biopic looking at the early years of boxer “Irish” Mickey Ward (Wahlberg) and his brother Dicky (Bale). A former boxer who washed out due to drugs and crime, Dicky helped train Mickey before he turned pro in the mid 80s and went on to win the World Welterweight Title. Adams would play a Massachusetts bartender who ends up dating Wahlberg’s characters.
However if we were Adams, we’d be running for the hills. With Christian Bale’s Terminator: Salvation rant and David O’Russell having a bit of a reputation for blowing up on set (for example he had a bizarre argument with Lily Tomlin on the set of I Heart Huckabees which ended up on Youtube), it seems a bit like a recipe for disaster. Hopefully Wahlberg will be a calming influence, although as he’s been known to get rather angry in the past, somehow we doubt it.
The Fighter is due out in 2011, assuming they don’t all kill each other on set, of course.
