Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen has made a big splash in the States, grossing an estimated $16 million just from midnight showings on Tuesday night. It’s the second biggest midnight take ever, after The Dark Knight, which took $18.5 million, although that movie had the benefit of opening on a Friday.
The movie now has a very good chance of beating Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix’s record for the biggest opening day ever for a film released on a Wednesday. That movie took $44.2 million on July 11th, 2009, but with Transformers doing more than a third of that just from screenings taking place in the middle of the night, it could have a lot to shout about come tomorrow when estimates for its first full day are released.
However opening on a working day means it’s unlikely to beat The Dark Knight’s overall single day record. That film made $67.16 million on its opening day (July 18th, 2008). Even so, the midnight screenings bode incredibly well for Transformers 2 and could well mean that this really is the film to beat this summer.
