Ever since it was announced that Warner Bros was splitting the final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, and making two film out of it, fans have been speculating over where exactly the cut would come between the two movies. There have been numerous theories, some more likely than others, but now director David Yates has given his clearest indication yet as to exactly where Deathly Hallows Part 1 may end.
Talking to the LA Times, Yates said, “Things can change when you edit, of course, but the idea now is that it [the split] will be not long after the sequence that we are filming here today. That’s what we’re experimenting with. We’ve had three or four different ideas about where to cut off the seventh film. Traditionally, the movies have ended with a death or a bereavement, some sort of passage or arrival. This time we think we will end with more a cliffhanger. Again, though, that’s the thought as of this moment.”
SPOILER ALERT – If you don’t want to know more, don’t read the next paragraph.
While that of course doesn’t mean much on its own, earlier in the article Yates reveals, “We’ve just finished the scene where Harry, Hermione and Ron are captured by the Snatchers after being chased through the woods. The Snatchers are brutal and scary but they aren’t the most intelligent of creatures. They’re trying to figure out exactly who it is they’ve caught.”
Anyone who’s read the books will know exactly where this comes and what happens just afterwards, and there is indeed plenty of scope for a cliffhanger ending around this point with Harry and co. trapped at the Malfoy’s mansion.
However, it doesn’t actually sound like any definitve decision about where the split will occur has been made yet, so things may change.
