A slice of movie history is currently up for sale, as Ennis House, which served as the exterior of Deckard’s apartment in the classic Blade Runner, has been put on the market. While it only briefly appeared in the movie as Harrison Ford drives up to the house, its iconic carved concrete design was also incorporated into the sets for the apartment interior.
The house hasn’t just appeared in Blade Runner though, it’s also served as a location for The House On Haunted Hill (1957 version), The Day Of The Locust, Black Rain, The Karate Kid III, Rush Hour, The Replacement Killers, as well as being a mansion that Angel, Spike and Drusilla live in in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It even appeared in animated form in the South Episode ‘Wing’, as the home of some Chinese gangsters, along with many other movie and TV appearances.
Ennis House is considered to be one of the most important by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, built during his experimental textile block style, which used ornately carved concrete to create a modern yet Mayan inspired building. Having been damaged by earthquakes and torrential rain, the Ennis House Foundation has been trying to restore the building to its former glory, but now, having made the house stable, they’ve put it on the market. It’ll cost someone $15 million, plus $5-$7 million to restore to building to its former glory, so this isn’t your normal fixer upper.
Whether they’ll find anyone to pay that sort of money, despite the buildings unique deisgn and importance of the building, is yet to be seen.
