DC Comics likes to talk about adapting their characters for the screen, but unlike Marvel the movies don’t actually happen all that much. Wonder Woman is stuck in development hell, Justice League was announced but now seems to be dead, the Superman sequel is going through all sorts of re-writes and alterations and many other characters just have to sit on the shelf waiting their turn. However one film that does seem to be going ahead is Green Lantern.
It was first announced over a year ago, but since then things have gone rather but quiet, but in an interview with SciFiWire, writer Marc Guggenheim has said he’s delivered a new draft for the script, which is being penned by him, Greg Berlanti and Michael Green. The script will focus on Hal Jordan, a DC Silver Age character and follow how he became a member of the Green Lantern Corps.
Guggenheim kept tight lipped about any specifics, saying, “I’ve sworn a blood oath of secrecy in relation to the project. But, you know, the thing I can tell you is that it is a very loving and respectful approach.” He also said that all casting rumours are incorrect, “Insofar as we haven’t chosen anyone yet. They’re still in the negotiations, you know? There’s a lot of names being talked about, and there’s a lot of people being met, and a lot of … actors reading the script. But if you read online Pauly Shore’s been cast as Hal Jordan, I can guarantee you we have not cast anyone.”
The movie is believed to be staring production in Australia later in the year with Marc Campbell directing. It’s likely DC is looking at this as a test case, seeing whether they can copy Iron Man, and turn one of their lesser known characters into a major movie franchise. To be honest, the Green Latern, a group of characters with rings that give them certain powers over the physical world, has the potential to be a superb film, so lets keep our fingers crossed.
