The straight to DVD sequel to Donnie Darko, S. Darko, isn’t due out over here until July 6th, but reports have surfaced the 20th Century Fox is already at work on a third movie in the franchise, and this time it may have some involvement from the writer/director of the original, Richard Kelly.
S. Darko picks the story up seven years after the events of Donnie Darko, with Donnie’s younger sister, Samantha, struggling through adoloescence. She starts having visions of the end of the universe after a meteorite crashes nearby during a road trip and the fate of the world may rest in her hands. God knows what a third film would be about, but we’re betting it’d be weird.
Bloody Disgusting is reporting that since the release of the second film in the States last month, Fox is indeed working on that third instalment and it may involve Kelly in some way. You can understand why Fox might be interested in making more, as the sequel probably didn’t cost much to produce, but comes with a very devoted following.
