In what was a virtual rerun of last weekend, the comedy The Hangover has won the US box office race for the second weekend in a row. It grossed another $33 million over the weekend to take its 10 day total to an impressive $105 million – a great success for a movie that only cost $45 million to make.
Pixar’s Up once again made it into second place, with $30.5 million, pushing the weekend’s big release, The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3, into third place. Although the film’s $25 million can’t be considered a failure, the studio must have been hoping to take the number one spot, especially as the Tony Scott/Denzel Washington combination has a great track record.
The only other new entry was Eddie Murphy’s Imagine That, which tanked with only $5.7 million after some truly hideous reviews, and will now join the ever-growing list of Murphy family flicks that have died a death at the box office.
However perhaps most notable was what was going on further down the list, where the Sam Rockwell sci-fi flick Moon grossed $145,000 on only eight screens. The film has been highly praised by critics and this encouraging result may encourage the distributors to widen its release. Food, Inc., an unflattering look at America’s corporate controlled food industry, made $63,000 on only three screens, giving it highest total on average per theatre of any film this weekend.
