It’s been in development hell for nearly a decade, but it looks like the remake/reimagining of Conan The Barbarian might finally be back on track as Marcus Nispel has been announced as the film’s director. He may look a bit like a tramp, but he’s helmed the likes of Pathfinder and Friday The 13th, which might make him a good fit for the fantasy flick.
Filming is due to start later this year in Bulgaria and South Africa, although there’s no news yet on who will be playing the muscled one, immortalised by Arnie back in 1982. It looks like Conan won’t lose his violence in these PG-13 times though, with Nispel promising he’ll be influenced by Frank Fazetta’s Conan illustrations and viscerally violent period movies like Apocalypto.
Marcus is hopefully the last of an endless stream of directors attached to the project, which have included the Wachowskis, Robert Rodriguez and Brett Ratner, amongst others. The question remains though – do people really want to see another Conan, and is that why the producers have had such difficulty getting the project off the ground?
