In a slightly unexpected movie, Dragonball Evolution star James Marsters has apparently said that plans are moving forward for a sequel to the movie. It’s a surprise because the film cost $45 million to make, but only grossed $9 million in the US (and less than a million pounds in the UK). However it’s apparently been popular in Asia, which has added tens of millions to the gross. With the lucrative DVD and Blu-ray releases still to come, apparently Fox reckons it’s worth a punt on number two.
Hopefully this time though, they won’t make a movie that’s so dim.
With the rise in importance of Asian economies, the continent is likely to exert increasing influence over which movies get made and which don’t. Hollywood has been realising the importance of Asia more and more over the last few years, with many studios investing in making films in China and India, although this is the first case we can think of where a Hollywood sequel seems to be going forward purely because of a film’s success in the continent, when it tanked majorly elsewhere.
