With IMAX able to charge premium ticket prices, it seems Hollywood is becoming increasingly enamoured with producing versions of movies just for the massive screen format. Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince will feature IMAX only 3D scenes and now Michael Bay has confirmed that he’s produced a longer version of Tranformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, just for IMAX.
Here’s what he’s had to say about the version on his official blog: “The way to see this movie is on IMAX. Never before has there been 4k rendered character animation shot on full IMAX 70 mm film. This is a first and the results are stunning. You will see Optimus Prime in a few shots where he is actually perfectly to scale on the IMAX 50 foot tall screens. For IMAX, I created a slightly longer cut with more robot fighting. Four scenes were shot on IMAX cameras so the screen will fill the full IMAX screen for these scenes.”
This also shows that as with some of the action scenes for The Dark Knight, Bay has been filming some of Transformers 2 in the IMAX format, which offers maximum resolution.
He also revealed that he hasn’t finished the movie yet, which is a bit of a worry, seeing as the Japanese premiere is this evening. Apparently thing are going so far down to the wire that Bay has to approve the final shots between the Japanese press conference in the morning and the premiere in the evening.
Oh, and there’s going to be 42 robots in all. That seems like a hell of a lot to me, but it’ll let Bay blow a lot more things up, and let’s face it, that’s mainly what he enjoys about filmmaking.
