With most of the other major Oscar contenders from this year’s awards coming to DVD in May or June, the final big gun has now confirmed it’ll be hitting the home entertainment shelves in the UK on July 6th with a few juicy bonus features attached.
Doubt sees a progressive priest at a school in 1960s New York coming up against an old fashioned and stubborn nun in the form of Meryl Streep’s Sister Aloysius. When a young nun shares her worries with Aloysius that the priest is lavishing a little too much attention on one student, it causes the older nun to go on the warpath. Despite having no proof of what’s going on, her absolute moral conviction sees her lock into a battle of wills with the priest, which threatens to tear apart the community.
It’s a morally complex tale, partly based on director/writer John Patrick Shanley’s experiences in a similar religious school when he was growing up. Despite winning no Oscars, it’s still one of the year’s strongest dramas, but whether the DVD and Blu-ray is equally as strong is yet to be seen.
