Every movie needs a villain and with it being recently announced that Michael Douglas will be stepping back into Gordon Gekko’s shoes for Oliver Stone’s long gestating sequel to Wall Street, it now appears Javier Bardem has signed onto to play the financial bad guy in the flick, while Shia LaBeouf will play the wide-eyed young hero.
apparently in the sequel (known either as Wall Street 2 or Money Never Sleeps) Gekko is a bit a reformed character. Set just before the current financial meltdown, he’s finished his prison sentence and is on the fringe of the fianacial community warning that the end is nigh, but no one is listening. LaBeouf plays a young Wall Street trader who’s engaged to Gekko’s estranged daughter. He believes the actions of a hedge fund manager (Bardem) caused his mentor to kill himself and sets out to get revenge.
Apparently the timeline of the film will take us from before the financial crash right through to the US government bailout.
It may have been a long time since the original (and we’re still hoping for a Charlie Sheen cameo), but it’s certainly very timely and could do for the current situation what the original did for 80s greed. It currently looks like the film will be in cinemas next February, with shooting due to begin this August 10th.
