While it was recently announced that PIrates Of The Caribbean helmer Gore Verbinski was taking on the adaptation of the hit videogame Bioshock, it now appears that the director is thinking about backing out, and not for artistic reasons.
During an interview the LA Times conducted with the director, he revealed that, “The bottom line is it has to shoot out of the States for budget reasons and my schedule may be prohibitive. There’s a great script and a really interesting cast. It really comes down to the financial model now. Big movies are just not being shot in the States. I’m weighing whether I can physically go the U.K. or Australia or one of those other places with a tax rebate for a year-and-a-half.”
So basically it sounds like it’s more about the money than the movie that’s giving him second thoughts. In many ways it’s quite brave of him to admit it, as you don’t hear many actors or directors admitting that they might drop out of a film for tax reasons, although it probably happens quite a lot. But come on Gore, you’ll still walk away with millions, even if you do come to the UK to shoot.
It’s also been recently confirmed that he won’t be directing Pirates Of The Caribbean 4, although that movie has been confirmed for 2012 with Johnny Depp still likely to be playing Jack Sparrow.
