According to a press release about David Tennant’s appearance in the children’s spin-off series, ‘The Sarah Jane Adventures’, it says that a script for a Doctor Who movie is in the works. Nothing more is known about it at the moment, not least who would be playing the Doctor. New Who, Matt Smith, takes over the role on the small screen next year, but that doesn’t necesarily mean Tennant can’t appear in a film. Indeed speculation from places like slashfilm suggest the regeneration from Tennant to Smith may take place offscreen, allowing Tennant to continue to play the role ocassionally.
It wouldn’t be the first Who film, as Peter Cushing played the role in the 1960s films Doctor Who And The Dalek and Daleks Invasion Earth: 2150 AD, however with modern effects, it’d certainly be a whole different ballgame. The big question however is whether a Doctor Who film could compete on special effects and action with Hollywood’s big guns.
