New Shaun The Sheep Teaser Trailer – Fresh look at the Aardman animation

30th August 2014 By Tim Isaac

It takes a long time for Aardman to make one of their stop-motion animated movies, so we’ve been waiting quite a long time for the Wallace & Gromit spin-off, Shaun The Sheep. Now a new teaser trailer has arrived to get us excited for the February 6th 2015 UK release.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When SHAUN decides to take the day off and have some fun, he gets a little more action than he bargained for! SHAUN’s mischief inadvertently leads to The Farmer being taken away from the farm, to the Big City…

‘Join SHAUN, Bitzer and The Flock on their hilarious, action-packed, big screen adventure as they make plans to rescue the missing Farmer. A story about how we sometimes forget to appreciate the things we have in life, and the people who love us. SHAUN THE SHEEP THE MOVIE introduces us to two new Aardman characters; TRUMPER, the animal warden who rules the city’s animal shelter with a rod of iron and SLIP, an inner city orphan dog who helps SHAUN save the day.

‘SHAUN THE SHEEP was first seen in Nick Park’s Academy-Award winning Wallace and Gromit film A CLOSE SHAVE and SHAUN, the world’s most famous sheep continues to enthral television audiences in over 170 countries.’

The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari – The first proper horror movie returns to cinemas

29th August 2014 By Tim Isaac

Along with Nosferatu, Caligari is one of the cornerstones of horror film. Like Nosferatu, it has become so familiar, especially its expressionist sets, that it’s easy to forget just how powerful, pacy and scary it is, and how marvellous it looks, especially in this new cleaned up version from the excellent Eureka cinema, keepers of the flame.

It creates a fantastic world of its own, right from the opening shots. A young man tells an older friend the story of what happened to his fiancée, who seems to be in a trance of some sort. We go back in time to when the circus came to town, featuring a ring master who has a somnambulist at his disposal, a freakishly tall, gaunt man (Veidt) who can be woken from his trance and tell a punter his future.

The circus coincides with a series of horrific murders, one of which the somnambulist predicts. Is the ringmaster behind it all, with the sleeper as his puppet?

Told over six acts, it’s a lean, bleak tale but it creates a fantastically gloomy mood and sticks to it. The acting is very much of its time, but what is remarkable is the glorious theatrical sets, some of which can still be seen at the Babelsberg studios in Berlin. Chimneys bend, windows are angular, doors are triangular, pathways are straight out of a gothic fairytale. Now it would be cool, for 1920 it’s remarkable. The scene where Veidt breaks into the heroine’s bedroom and carries her onto a rooftop has rightly passed into film history, but to see it again is still thrilling.

Seeing Veidt in his trademark role is also extraordinary. He has the body of a ballet dancer, and, apparently the strength – he carries the heroine like she weighs nothing – and seeing him slither round corners in his dark clothes is quite a sight. It was to be the role that haunted him for the rest of his short life, he admitted he never quite threw it off and it’s easy to see why.

Clearly something was going on in 1920s Germany, and it was pretty dark. The First World War had just ended, with its terrible toll, and the decadent Berlin of the 1920s was just getting underway, and this film is the perfect example of just how bad the undercurrent of feeling was. Generally credited with being the first full-on horror film, it still packs a weighty punch. See it in a cinema if you can, it’s a piece of history.

Overall verdict: Most people call it a classic of German expressionist cinema, actually it’s just a stone cold classic. Brilliant, and still shocking.

The Rewrite Trailer – Hugh Grant returns to rom-com land alongside Marisa Tomei

29th August 2014 By Tim Isaac

While Hugh Grant is probably best known for making romantic comedies, he hasn’t actually been in one since 2009’s dreadful Did You Hear About The Morgans?. However now he’s back in that territory with The Rewrite, which comes from Marc Lawrence, writer of Two Weeks Notice and Miss Congenialty.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Once upon a time, screenwriter Keith Michaels (Hugh Grant) was on top of the world – a Golden Globe Award and a hit movie to his name, a beautiful wife and a seemingly inexhaustible supply of wit and charm. But that was fifteen years ago: now, he’s divorced, broke, approaching fifty and hasn’t written a hit film in years. Luckily, his agent has a job for him – a university in the quiet town of Binghamton is looking for someone to teach a course in screenwriting, and with an empty wallet as his motivation, Keith can’t say no. Hoping to give minimal attention to his duties and focus on writing a new script, his attitude slowly begins to turn when he meets Holly (Marisa Tomei). A single mum working two jobs to earn her degree, the pair find themselves connected by their mutual need for a second chance.’

It’ll be in UK cinemas on October 8th.

New Seventh Son Trailer – Jeff Bridges takes Ben Barnes under his wing

29th August 2014 By Tim Isaac

Seventh Son is nearly here. The movie has been in the works for years and even after it was shot there have been delays, as while it was originally due to be released October 2013, it’s not actually arriving in cinemas until next February.

Here’s the official synopsis: ‘In a time long past, an evil is about to be unleashed that will reignite the war between the forces of the supernatural and humankind once more.

‘Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges) is a knight who had imprisoned the malevolently powerful witch, Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore), centuries ago. But now she has escaped and is seeking vengeance. Summoning her followers of every incarceration, Mother Malkin is preparing to unleash her terrible wrath on an unsuspecting world.

‘Only one thing stands in her way: Master Gregory. In a deadly reunion, Gregory comes face to face with the evil he always feared would someday return. Now he has only until the next full moon to do what normally takes years: train his new apprentice, Tom Ward (Ben Barnes) to fight a dark magic unlike any other.

‘Man’s only hope lies in the seventh son of a seventh son.’

Full Horns Trailer – There’s something different about Daniel Radcliffe

29th August 2014 By Tim Isaac

There are quite a few people out there who’d like to see Daniel Radcliffe with a horn. Well now’s your chance!

The full UK trailer for Horns has now arrived, which focuses on the early parts of the movie, before Radcliffe wakes up on morning to literally find he has horns growing out of his forehead.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From master-of-horror Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D) comes this supernatural, offbeat thriller starring beloved British actor Danielle Radcliffe (Harry Potter, Kill Your Darlings) and the talented Juno Temple (Magic Magic, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For).

‘Ig Perrish (Daniel Radcliffe) is accused for the violent rape and killing of his girlfriend, Merrin Williams (Juno Temple). After a hard night of drinking, Ig awakens, hungover, to find horns growing out of his head; they have the ability to drive people to confess sins and give in to selfish impulses. Ig decides to use this effective tool to discover the circumstances of his girlfriend’s death and to seek revenge by finding the true murderer.

‘Daniel and Juno lead an all-star cast with strong support from David Morse (The Green Mile, The Hurt Locker) and Heather Graham (The Hangover I&II, Boogie Nights).

‘HORNS is based on the dark fantasy novel of the same name from New York Times best-selling author Joe Hill (Heart Shaped Box) with a screenplay by Keith Burnin. Alexandre Aja, Riza Aziz, Joey McFarland and Cathy Schulman produce.’

Horns arrives in the UK on Wednesday 29th October 2014.
