Will Smith, Ryan Gosling & Tom Hardy Wanted For Suicide Squad – Margot Robbie also on the list

17th October 2014 By Tim Isaac

With a 2016 release date confirmation announced a couple of days ago for Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. and director David Ayer need to put a cast together fairly soon to get it ready for its August 5th release.

And it looks like they’re aiming big, as THR report that offers have already gone out to Will Smith and Margot Robbie for the movie and that they’re also eying Tom Hardy (although it’s not known if he has any interest).

If that weren’t enough star power, they’ve apparently made overtures to Ryan Gosling, but he’s in a bit of a comic book battle as it’s also rumoured that he’s near the top of the shortlist for Marvel’s Doctor Strange.

It was recently reported that Suicide Squad will focus on seven villains, who have been captured but are offered the chance for redemption with a mission none of them are expected to survive. The rumoured bad guys are Blockbuster (Mark Desmond), Multiplex (Danton Black), Jaculi, Mindboggler (Leah Wasserman), Captain Boomerang (George Harkness), Vixen (Mari Jiwe McCabe) and Deadshot (Floyd Lawton).

Captain Boomerang, Vixen and Deadshot are said to be the leads in the movie, but it’s not known which actors are being considered for which parts.

Shawn Levy Up For Minecraft Film – He’s in talks to direct the videogame adaptation

17th October 2014 By Tim Isaac

12 months ago a Minecraft film might have seemed like a bad idea, but after The Lego Movie hit it big, it proved that just because a property doesn’t offer up an obvious story, doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea. Now the movie has a director, as Deadline reports that Night At The Museum and Real Steel’s Shawn Levy is in talks to helm.

The open world video game involves player mining pieces and using the cubes they create to build walls and other constructions in order to protect them from evil nocturnal monsters in a world known as The Nether.

While it initially did have a storyline, it’s now best known for allowing users to create incredible environment, with entire virtual cities being built, as well a recreations of real world environments. It currently has over 100 million registered users.

At the moment it isn’t known when we’ll see the Minecraft movie.

New Unbroken Trailer – Fresh look at Jack O’Connell in Angelina Jolie’s movie

16th October 2014 By Tim Isaac

There’s a lot of interest in Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken, with many suggesting it could turn her into a major force behind the camera and could even snag her a Best Director Oscar nom. Now a new trailer has arrived, which you can take a look at below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Academy Award® winner Angelina Jolie directs and produces Unbroken, an epic drama that follows the incredible life of Olympian and war hero Louis “Louie” Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) who, along with two other crewmen, survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII—only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp.

‘Adapted from Laura Hillenbrand’s (“Seabiscuit: An American Legend”) enormously popular book, Unbroken brings to the big screen Zamperini’s unbelievable and inspiring true story about the resilient power of the human spirit.

‘Starring alongside O’Connell are Domhnall Gleeson and Finn Wittrock as Phil and Mac—the airmen with whom Zamperini endured perilous weeks adrift in the open Pacific—Garrett Hedlund and John Magaro as fellow POWs who find an unexpected camaraderie during their internment, Alex Russell as Zamperini’s brother, Pete, and in his English-language feature debut, Japanese actor Miyavi as the brutal camp guard known only to the men as “The Bird.”’

It’s due in UK cinemas at Christmas.

In the Heart of the Sea Trailer – Chris Hemsworth takes on a whale of a tale

16th October 2014 By Tim Isaac

We’ve been waiting quite a while for In The Heart Of The Sea, which shot last autumn but won’t by in UK cinemas until March next year.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Oscar winner Ron Howard (“A Beautiful Mind”) directs the action adventure “In the Heart of the Sea,” based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s best-selling book about the dramatic true journey of the Essex.

‘In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. “In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

‘”In the Heart of the Sea” stars Chris Hemsworth (“The Avengers,” “Rush”) as the vessel’s veteran first mate Owen Chase; Benjamin Walker (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) as its inexperienced Captain, George Pollard; Cillian Murphy (“The Dark Knight Rises”) as second mate Matthew Joy; and Ben Whishaw (“Skyfall”) as novelist Herman Melville, whose inquiries into the event 30 years later helped bring the story to light.’

Tom Holland (“The Impossible”) also stars as young seaman Tom Nickerson, and Brendan Gleeson (“Edge of Tomorrow”) as the same man, 30 years later. Spanish actor Jordi Mollà (“Riddick”) is the captain of another ship, the Archimedes, who tries to warn the Essex of what may lie ahead.’

Gal Gadot May Be Ben-Hur Female Lead – Going from Wonder Woman to Bible times

16th October 2014 By Tim Isaac

At the moment the majority of the general public couldn’t pick Gal Gadot out of a lineup (despite the fact she’s appeared in a few Fast & Furious movies), but Hollywood is betting big on the actress. She’s already lined up to play Wonder Woman in Batman V Superman and a solo movie, and now THR reports that she’s in early talks to take the female lead in the planned remake of Ben-Hur.

Assuming she signs on, she’ll join Jack Huston as the title character, alongside Toby Kebbell as Messalla. While the two were friends as boys, with the coming of the Romans Messalla betrays Ben-Hur, which results in his being sold into slavery. He then meets a character played by Morgan Freeman, who teaches him to become a champion chariot racer.

Gadot would play a fellow slave called Esther, who Ben-Hur falls for.

The story take place in parallel to that of Jesus, which its said will be more central to this version that the peripheral (and never properly seen) figure he was in the Oscar-winning 1959 version.

Timur Bekmambetov is set to direct from a screenplay by Keith R. Clarke, with production set to kick off early next year.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Heroes in a half-shell or just half-baked?

15th October 2014 By Tim Isaac

I was a childhood fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – I had all the figurines, watched every cartoon episode and generally couldn’t get enough. With this in mind I approached the film with extreme caution – could it live up to the franchise? So far, Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy have been the only ‘superhero’ films that have really had me on the edge of my seat. I was certainly worried that TMNT would not live up to my expectations.

Unfortunately I must admit that it did fall a little short. In a similar vein to the various Hulk films, TMNT didn’t quite do the characters justice. The characters are too fantastical to really have a human feel and aren’t believable when they interact with the ‘real-life’ actors. However at the same time ask us to believe in them in the same way we treat the human characters – empathising with them and engaging in their development throughout the story.

The film plays it safe at every turn, with the setting, characters and story all generally a bit un-moving. It seems to be created for quite a young audience, and the film doesn’t have as much grit as I hoped. Megan Fox is also not exactly my kind of April O’Neil – she doesn’t even have red hair! Combined with the fact that this is a Michael Bay produced film, watching her in this action movie made me feel like I was watching Transformers – except without any Transformers or Shia LaBeouf.

The story itself is pretty straightforward. We are introduced to the turtles early on, in an opening sequence that tells of their current circumstances (living under the city in the sewers, and not ready to be seen by the world), without giving any visual clues away. For a large section of the beginning of the film we learn about April’s background. Fox plays this rather woodenly and I found little interest in her ‘I want to make it big as a news reporter’ story.

The less-than-ideal casting continues with Will Arnett as Vernon Fenwick, April’s reporter side-kick. Although great in other roles, I did not enjoy Arnett as this character. We eventually meet the Turtles and to be fair, they do look good. They’re meaner and more sophisticated than TMNT’s in films of decades past and are certainly convincing on film. Their ‘teenage-ness’ is quite evident and there are plenty of goofball jokes to be made.

As the film continues, we are introduced to villains including Shredder (Tohoru Msamune), and the Foot clan. In another disappointing turn, The Foot, instead of being a cult-like, faceless, intimidating ninja force, are more militant and bumbling; nothing extraordinary. In another classic Michael Bay-esque move, The Shredder is completely overdone with an Iron Man-style suit complete with shooting spikes and enough blades to make him look like a Swiss Army Knife. Ridiculous.

A rather typical plan to bring New York City to its knees ensues, including a plot twist that sees William Fitchner’s character Eric Sacks planning to become very rich by ‘saving’ the city he has helped cripple. The Turtles need to rise above their differences and work together as a team to save the day. Despite all the criticism’s, there are some fun action scenes. All the Turtle-esque moments you’d expect are there – from their love for Pizza, each characters unique traits (Raphael is cool but rude, Michelangelo is a party dude etc.), to some decent fight scenes and catch phrases (Cowabunga!). But all-in-all it doesn’t quite work.

Overall Verdict: There are a lot of elements that are not quite what I was hoping for, which mainly involves the characters not being a true reflection of the original characters. However, for whom this film is aimed at – a new generation of film goers (younger than 10yrs!) this will still provide a fun ride with some quirky moments to enjoy. They are firmly reflective of today’s youth culture in their behaviours, and for those with low expectations, they provide an entertaining film in the same ilk as other films in the Michael Bay fleet.
