Minions Trailer – Gru’s little yellow friends are getting their own movie

4th November 2014 By Tim Isaac

Without the Minions, there’s a good chance Despicable Me wouldn’t have been the hit it was. If nothing else they’ve been a massive merchandising bonanza, so it’s not too much of a shock that the small, yellow oblongs are getting their own film.

Now the first trailer has arrived which you can take a look at below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The story of Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’sMinionsbegins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters—fromT. rexto Napoleon—the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.

‘But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he—alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob—ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.

‘The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award®winner Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind…from annihilation.

‘Featuring a soundtrack of hit music from the ’60s that still permeates our culture today,Minionsis produced by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy, and is directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda. Brian Lynch has written the screenplay for the 3D-CG comedy adventure, and Chris Renaud serves as executive producer of the film.’

The movie is due out June 2015.

Jake Gyllenhaal Will Be The Man Who Made It Snow – With Antoine Fuqua directing

4th November 2014 By Tim Isaac

Jake Gyllenhaal got some of the best notices of his career for the just released Nightcrawler (and not solely for his dramatic weight loss). It now looks like he’s interested in staying in morally ambiguous territory with The Man Who Made It Snow according to Deadline.

The film will reunite him with director Antoine Fuqua, who have only just finished working together on the upcoming movie Southpaw.

Although the title on the new film make it sound like this will be a sweet, charming tale, the ‘Snow’ of the title has a double meaning. The Man Who Made It Snow tells the true story of Max Mermelstein, ‘a Jewish hotel engineer who transformed Pablo Escobar’s Medellin Cartel from a small mom-and-pop drug organization into a billion-dollar enterprise’. However he later turned against Escobar and acted as a witness for the US government.

The plan is to shoot the movie late next year, once the full funding is in place.

Henry Cavill Takes On Stratton – He’ll star in the action thriller

4th November 2014 By Tim Isaac

Henry Cavill can’t spend all his time wearing a large ‘S’ on his chest (well, I suppose he could, but he’d get a few funny looks), so he’s signed up to spend part of his time between Batman V Superman and Justice League starring in the action thriller Stratton.

Deadline reports Cavill will produce and star in the potential franchise, which is based on an eight novel series by Duncan Falconer, a form military man who writes under a pseudonym. John Stratton ‘is an operative of the SBS who works with the Intelligence Detachment in Northern Ireland’.

There’s no info on exactly which of the books the film will be based on, but it appears it’ll be an international adventure, starting out Kazakhstan and China, before moving to mainland Europe and London.

Cavill comments, “Having the opportunity to expand my horizons into filmmaking is incredibly exciting. Getting to work so closely with my brother [Charlie Cavill, who will also produce] in this venture is equally so.”

The film will be looking for funding at the American Film Market, but it doesn’t appear a director is currently attached.

WIN! Wolf On DVD Plus A Poster! – The Raindance closer is up for grabs

3rd November 2014 By Tim Isaac

To celebrate the release of “Wolf”, out on DVD 3rd November 2014, we have a copy of the film and the official quad poster to giveaway courtesy of Studiocanal.

The official closing gala at this year’s Raindance Film Festival, “Wolf” is a gritty, stylish and uncompromising crime saga that recalls the early works of Martin Scorsese and Michael Cimino. Jim Taihuttu directs the proceedings with verve, while leading man Marwan Kenzari delivers a blistering, charismatic performance that somehow turns the unsavoury Majid into a sympathetic and almost likeable anti-hero.

Chef (DVD) – Jon Favreau turns more Iron Chef than Iron Man

3rd November 2014 By Tim Isaac

Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) is a brilliant chef but not much good at anything else. Or at least, so it first appears. His marriage to Inez (Sofia Vergara of Modern Family) has failed. He has an awkward relationship with his young son (Emjay Anthony) and an openly confrontational one with his boss (Dustin Hoffman). Worse still, his amateurish understanding of the workings of social media has seen him become embroiled in a Twitter War with a prominent food critic (Oliver Platt).

As you may have noticed already, Chef has an excellent cast. Favreau’s old Iron Man buddy Downey Junior has an enjoyable cameo as Carl’s ex’s other ex. Other stars such as Scarlett Johansson are largely wasted.

But throughout Chef, it’s the little touches that impress the most. The cooking scenes are surprisingly compelling (a good job as there are a lot of them) and director/star Favreau avoids easy clichés in a script which manages to be both funny and moving without being sentimental. Carl is never exactly a complete bastard to his son, for example, merely a bit distant and preoccupied with his work. The relationship between Carl and his ex is also warmer than one might expect and child actor Emjay Anthony is excellent.

With a good audio commentary and a few deleted scenes, Chef is never a self indulgent feast of a movie. But it is in its own quiet way, a small delight.

Overall Verdict: An unexpected treat which goes down very nicely indeed.

Special Features:
Audio Commentary with Jon Favreau and Chef/Co-Producer Roy Choi
Deleted Scenes

Fast & Furious 7 Trailer – First look at Paul Walker’s final film

2nd November 2014 By Tim Isaac

While the production of Fast & Furious 7 (known simply as Furious 7 in the US) was marked by tragedy with the death of Paul Walker, the first trailer suggests that the actual movie will be the car-based madness we’ve come to expect from the franchise.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Continuing the global exploits in the unstoppable franchise built on speed, Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson lead the returning cast of Fast & Furious 7. James Wan directs this chapter of the hugely successful series that also welcomes back favorites Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Elsa Pataky and Lucas Black. They are joined by international action stars new to the franchise including Jason Statham, Djimon Hounsou, Tony Jaa, Ronda Rousey and Kurt Russell. Neal H. Moritz, Vin Diesel and Michael Fottrell return to produce the film written by Chris Morgan.’

The movie will be in UK cinemas next April.
