Robert de Niro Will Have Joy – He’s reuniting with Jennifer Lawrence & David O. Russell

12th November 2014 By Tim Isaac

David O. Russell has always liked working with the same actors on different films, even if in the past his temper has meant people haven’t wanted to work with him. However he’s calmed down in recent years and a few months ago it was revealed he was due to make his third movie in a row with Jennifer Lawrence, Joy.

Now he’s bringing in a fellow Silver Linings Playbook actor to star alongside Lawrence, Robert de Niro, according to THR.

The film is a biopic of Jot Mangano, a struggling Long Island single mom of three who became one of the country’s most successful entrepreneurs with her self-wringing Miracle Mop invention. Annie Mumolo wrote the script about a woman who was working three jobs to try and support her family, and had to fight to get her invention recognised, but it eventually became a home shopping sensation, including her becoming one of the Home Shopping Network’s most successful presenters. Robert De Niro will play Joy’s father.

The film is due to shoot next February and may well be making an Oscar run at the end of 2015.

New Exodus: Gods And Kings Trailer – Ridley Scott takes on Moses with Christian Bale

11th November 2014 By Tim Isaac

Will Exodus: Gods and Kings usher in a new wave of big budget biblical epics? If it hits big numbers, between Exodus and Noah it may well convince Hollywood to put the many bible-based movies they’ve got into development into production.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Twentieth Century Fox present the theatrical release of EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS in the UK and Ireland on 26th December. From acclaimed director Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Prometheus) comes the epic adventure EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS, the story of one man’s daring courage to take on the might of an empire. Using state of the art visual effects and 3D immersion, Scott brings new life to the story of the defiant leader Moses (Christian Bale) as he rises up against the Egyptian Pharaoh Rhamses (Joel Edgerton), setting 400,000 slaves on a monumental journey of escape from Egypt and its terrifying cycle of deadly plagues.’

The movie will be in UK cinemas on December 26th.

Matt Damon Confirms He’ll Be Back As Jason Bourne – He’ll return in 2016

10th November 2014 By Tim Isaac

In September is was reported that director Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon were in talks to make another Bourne movie. While the sources seemed pretty solid, Damon himself wasn’t saying anything about it, and with talks for a fourth Jason Bourne movie having fallen through before, it wasn’t completely certain.

However now Matt himself has confirmed it, telling E! News, telling them, “Yes, next year [we’ll shoot it]. It’ll be in 2016 when the movie will actually come out. Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that’s all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes.”

Damon is just about to shoot The Martian for Ridley Scott and he’s also recently signed up for Alexander Payne’s Downsizing, so presumably the new Bourne movie will come after those films.

Previously 2016 was set to get a sequel to The Bourne Legacy starring Jeremy Renner, but when Damon and Greengrass came on board, that film took a backseat. It’s not clear yet whether they’ll bring in Renner to star alongside Damon, or whether we’ll have to wait longer for his return to the franchise.

Family Guy – Season 14 (DVD) – Will you get over the shock of a major character death?

9th November 2014 By Tim Isaac

Having just ended on BBC3 in the UK, Family Guy – Season 14 arrives on DVD in the UK. It’s perhaps the most controversial season in the show’s history – which isn’t bad going for a series that’s previously had two episodes that were fully animated and then rejected by the Fox network due to worries about their content.

However the controversy this time wasn’t due to Family Guy taking on abortion or concern about jokes about Jews – it’s because they killed off one of the main characters. Yep, a few episodes in to Season 14 Brian the faux-intellectual dog bites the big one (or at least bites the tarmac, seeing as he gets run over). However it shouldn’t come as too much of a shock to discover that this might not be the last time we see him.

It’s not all about killing off dogs though, as the season also sees Peter learning to live with a tiny vestigial twin on his shoulder, Meg finding a way to take on a bully who wants to kill her, the Griffins trying out life in Italy, Peter becoming intelligent (yes, really) and the return of Cleveland.

Unfortunately the Season doesn’t start out too brilliantly. With the first few episodes there’s a sense that the writing staff was running out of ideas and reaching for whatever dregs they could. Sure it’s a show where pretty much anything can happen, but things such as Peter’s miniature twin and his erectile dysfunction feel like the sort of thing that should have been cutaways, but have been stretched out to episode length.

Thankfully though the death of Brian is handled well and after about episode 10, things improve massively and it gets back to being the show we know and love. The boys going off to literally find God and Peter taking up smoking are a lot of fun, as is the conclusion of the season, where Stewie decides to find out what would have happened if he’d never have been born.

Although it’s a season of ups and down, overall it’s still extremely entertaining, and even the more random, weaker episodes will raise plenty of smiles.

The three disc set also includes some decent extras, including a great Featurette about the death of Brian and the social media frenzy it set off, along with a funny mash-up of Consuela’s best moments, some audio commentaries and loads of deleted scenes. It’s all worth a look.

Overall Verdict: It may not start out that well but Family Guys – Season 14 comes back strong

Special Features:
Brian Griffin: In Memoriam… Sort of
Consuela Mash-up
Deleted Scenes
Audio Commentary on Select Episodes
Full Episode Animatic on ‘Christmas Guy’

Begin Again (Blu-ray) – Keira Knightley & Mark Ruffalo make beautiful music together

9th November 2014 By Tim Isaac

Gretta (Keira Knightley) is young, English and has some talent as a singer and a good comedy sidekick/friend in Steve (James Corden). But her dreams of musical success in New York lie in tatters after her recent break-up with boyfriend and collaborator Dave (Adam Levine). She is bound for the next flight home.

Dan (Mark Ruffalo) meanwhile is middle aged and seems to be on the way down after both a successful producing career is on the skids and his marriage comes to an end. He happens to see Gretta performing at an open mic session on her last night in town. Could this meeting be exactly what these two lost souls need?

Admittedly, this film from Once director John Carney sounds predictable as hell on paper and to some extent, this is true. But Ruffalo is great, making a potentially sleazy character likeable. Knightley can sing and has some nice scenes bonding with Dan’s teenage daughter. There are no real villains here – even Gretta’s ex has redeeming qualities – and yes, this is relentlessly feelgood. But it’s not stupid either. So what’s wrong with that?

There is a “making of” featurette and some music videos. Haters of James Corden or Keira Knightley (and, yes, such people do exist) will want to steer clear and the music might repel some. But everyone else should find this an uplifting and rewarding musical treat.

Overall Verdict: The Hulk and Anna Karenina: together at last and unleashed on New York.

Special Features:
The Making of Begin Again Featurette
Music Videos
