Get Hard Trailer – Will Ferrell gets Kevin Hart to prepare him for life behind bars

22nd December 2014 By Tim Isaac

When millionaire hedge fund manager James King (Will Ferrell) is nailed for fraud and bound for a stretch in San Quentin, the judge gives him 30 days to get his affairs in order. Desperate, he turns to Darnell Lewis (Kevin Hart) to prep him for a life behind bars. But despite James’ one-percenter assumptions, Darnell is a hard-working small business owner who has never received a parking ticket, let alone been to prison.

Together, the two men do whatever it takes for James to “get hard” and, in the process, discover how wrong they were about a lot of things – including each other.

Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart join forces in the feature comedy “Get Hard,” also starring rapper Tip “T.I.” Harris, Alison Brie, and Craig T. Nelson.

The film is directed by Etan Cohen, making his feature directorial debut following a successful writing career, with credits including “Tropic Thunder.” The screenplay is by Jay Martel & Ian Roberts and Etan Cohen, story by Adam McKay and Jay Martel & Ian Roberts. Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Chris Henchy are the producers, with Ravi Mehta, Kevin Messick and Jessica Elbaum serving as executive producers.

The creative filmmaking team includes director of photography Tim Suhrstedt (“Little Miss Sunshine”); production designer Maher Ahmad (“The Hangover Part III”); editor Michael Sale (“We’re the Millers”); and costume designer Shay Cunliffe (“The Bourne Legacy”).

“Get Hard” is scheduled to open worldwide beginning Friday, March 27, 2015.

Kate Winslet Wanted For Steve Jobs Biopic – She could join Danny Boyle’s film

22nd December 2014 By Tim Isaac

Getting the biopic of Steve Jobs together, with a script by Aaron Sorkin, is turning out to be a lot more difficult than you would imagine. There’s been a bit of a revolving door of directors and actors in the main role, and recently it also jumped studios from Sony to Universal.

However they’re still struggling to get it to work, with Danny Boyle currently set to direct, with Michael Fassbender as Jobs, Seth Rogen as Steve Wozniak and Jeff Daniels as John Sculley.

There’s also been a few issues sorting out the female lead, with Jessica Chastain and Natalie Portman reportedly already having passed on the role. However Variety reports that the latest actress being sought for the part is Kate Winslet, although it’s not clear how close she is to signing on.

They’ll be hoping they can get it sorted soon though, as it’s known that Boyle wants to go into production as soon as possible.

There’s still not much info on the plot, but this time around Amanda Seyfried replaces Mila Kunis as the female lead, with Dennis Haysbert, Liam Neeson, and John Slattery all set to star.

Unbroken – Angelina Jolie takes to the director’s chair for a war movie

21st December 2014 By Tim Isaac

Ever wondered what a mix of Chariots Of Fire, Life of Pi and Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence would produce? No, me neither. Angelina Jolie’s sophomore directorial outing is clearly well-intentioned and has many things going for it, but is consistently let down by a lack of pace and insight, and a script which seems to just be a tribute to other war movies complete with every single cliché. Sadistic Japanese guards? Tick. Plucky Brits and Aussie prisoners? Tick. Back story of wayward boy becoming sporting hero? Tick. The result is almost terminally dull.

It tells the true story of Louis Zamperini, the American son of poor Italian immigrants who finds his calling in athletics – he runs fast because he is always being chased by the police or bullies. He competes in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, too early for success but that will all change at the next one. Cut to Louis as a gunner in a B-52 in the Far East conflict. When his plane crashes into the ocean he and two other airman are stranded in a liferaft for over a month – cue Life of Pi-style daydreams and shark attacks.

When they are picked up by a Japanese warship and sent to a prisoner of war camp Louis comes face to face with his nemesis, Watanabe, a corporal who he recognizes from the Olympics. Here we get into classic Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence territory – Watanabe is particularly sadistic to Louis, with a weird undercurrent of sexual tension, and the two become embroiled in a strange game of trying to break each other’s resolve.

Presumably Jolie’s intention is some sort of message of peace and forgiveness even in extreme circumstances, but the script falls into clichés far too often. Strangely it’s written by the Coen brothers, but there is little evidence of their idiosyncratic influence here. It’s all ‘never give up’-type stuff which becomes tiresome very quickly.

Jolie presumably had a blank cheque and certainly spent it on the look of the film, which is fantastic. There are several amazing sequences, especially the plane crash and some great work in the ocean where the men fight off sharks, and the details of the military equipment and uniforms are spot on. The acting too is flawless, especially Ishihara as the evil Watanabe, permanently whacking Louis with his stick while whispering into his ear. O’Connell is good as Louis, although he looks like a GQ model even while starving and covered in blood.

Jolie has been accused of racism and of being talentless by a press pack sniffing blood. That’s a little harsh on both counts, but what is clear is that she needs a much sharper script – and editor – to make her point heard.

Overall verdict: Overdone war movie which calls on too many of the genre clichés to make its mark as a stand-alone piece, with the usual set pieces and storyline. It’s far too long and brings little more to an already-stuffed genre, but there are glimpses of what could have been a far better film.

Backstreet Boys: Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of – The lads look back on their years together

19th December 2014 By Tim Isaac

After having a break for several years, the Backstreet Boys got back together in 2014 and as part of that they decided to make a film about their time together, where for several years they were the biggest pop group in the world.

Now a trailer for the documentary has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘An emotionally open and honest film portrait of the biggest boy band ever, THE BACKSTREET BOYS, who take us through the highs and lows from boyhood to manhood that led them back into a London studio in 2012 to write a new album, make a film and plan their 20th anniversary re-launch. The reunion renewed friendships, but dynamic shifts reveal new and old tensions that need confronting and resolving. Directed by Stephen Kijak (Stones in Exile, Scott Walker: 30 Century Man) this is a surprising and rewarding journey filmed over 2 years that delves into the extremes of fame/fortune, betrayal and renewal.’

The is released in selected UK and European cinemas on Thursday 26 February 2015, including a special performance by the band broadcast LIVE by satellite, followed by the international roll-out of the recorded release.
