Joel Kinnaman In Talks For Suicide Squad – He may replace Tom Hardy

14th February 2015 By Tim Isaac

When the cast for Suicide Squad was announced, Tom Hardy was amongst the throng. However when the filming dates slipped slightly he was out, with his schedule meaning he could no longer play Rick Flagg.

Now they may have found a replacement, as TheWrap reports Joel Kinnaman is in talks for the part. Joel Edgerton and Jon Bernthal were also in consideration, but it’s Kinnaman who’s bagged it.

Assuming he signs on the dotted line, he’ll join Will Smith (Deadshot), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jared Leto (The Joker), Jai Courtney (Boomerang), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress) and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller).

The movie revolveds around an array of supervillains, who have all been captured but are offered the chance for redemption by taking on a mission from which none of them are expected to return alive.

David Ayer is set to direct, with an August 5th, 2016 release date already been set.

Gina Carano To Star In Deadpool – X-Men’s Colossus will also appear

14th February 2015 By Tim Isaac

A few weeks ago – and after several years in development – the planned Deadpool movie finally got the greenlight from Fox. However with only about a year until the release, there’s still a lot to do, not least pull the cast together.

Ryan Reynolds will return in the title role, with T.J. Miller And Ed Skrein joining him a few weeks ago. Now the female lead has been found, with THR reporting that Gina Carano has signed up for the film. They add that the movie will also feature another X-Men character, Colossus, although it’s not known whether Daniel Cudmore, who played the role in three of the X-Men movies will return (it has been confirmed Deadpool will take place in the same universe as the other movies, so he may well do).

Gina Carano will play Angel Dust, who in the comics is one of the Morlocks, who usually live underground away from the rest of society. Her powers mimic the drug she’s named after, giving her ‘the ability to chemically supercharge her adrenaline levels, temporarily granting her superhuman strength.’

Tim Miller is directing, with the film set to start shooting in Vancouver starting next month. It’ll be released February 2016.

Love Is Strange – Aldred Molina & John Lithgow have post-marriage problems

12th February 2015 By Tim Isaac

Just in time for Valentine’s day, a film that genuinely shows the complexities, subtleties and nuances of us complicated human beings. It happens to be about two men of advancing years, but really its central themes could apply to anyone of any age. It’s a rich, rewarding experience that will haunt you for a long time.

John Lithgow and Alfred Molina are the central couple, two hugely liked and popular men who decide to get married after being together for so long. The story opens with their marriage day, a happy occasion with lots of laughter, wine and song. This bliss doesn’t last for long.

Molina loses his job in a church as a consequence, and with Lithgow a pensioner they cannot afford their lovely Manhattan apartment. They are forced to split up while they look for somewhere else to live. Molina finds himself in the impossibly noisy flat of their policeman pals, while Lithgow moves in with his niece, Marisa Tomei. She is a writer, slowly being driven mad by his chatter and funny habits, but there are other factors here too.

She has a husband who appears to take no notice of her, keeps getting mysterious phone calls and is always too tired for sex. Their son is troubled, struggling at school and has a weird relationship with a schoolfriend, Vlad.

The story takes its time to piece together the sort of things that crack relationships, the too loud music, the chatter, the tea slurping. There are moments of real tenderness, cuddling, joke cracking, and a couple of really sublime sequences. Molina berates a music student, all of eight years old, for her interpretation of Chopin, but when she plays it again he is transported. Similarly Lithgow is shown painting on his neice’s building roof, and the camera takes its time to take in the amazing, unique beauty of New York in the summer.

It’s not perfect by any means, for example there is a hippie character who refuses to take the old men in and whose role never gets anywhere. Similarly the source of the young boy’s troubles is never explicitly spelled out – perhaps it’s just the agony of being a youth, yearning for things that seem so far away. He gets the last shot of the film, it’s just a shame his role wasn’t more fully written.

Over its 90 minutes though it casts a spell which is difficult to resist. It’s wryly comic, sad and intriguing in equal measure, a joy to behold.

Overall verdict: a slow burn of a movie with charm, wit and honesty to burn. It may take its time but it will leave an indelible mark on your soul with its honest depiction of the everyday nature of having a partner. Charming.

Aloha Trailer – Emma Stone & Bradley Cooper star in Cameron Crowe’s latest

12th February 2015 By Tim Isaac

Cameron Crowe sure does like to take his time. There was a six year gap between Elizabethtown and We Bought A Zoo, and while it seemed he was going to quickly follow it with a Hawaii set movie, it’s taken a bit longer than originally planned.

The movie shot back in 2013, but it’s only now it’s finally preparing for release.

Aloha is about a defence contractor (Bradley Cooper) who is overseeing the launch of a weapons satellite in Hawaii. He ends up falling for an Air Force pilot (Emma Stone), and together they secretly plan to sabotage the launch. Giving things a slightly sci-fi flavour, the movie also features mysterious island forces and a talking computer. Rachel McAdams, John Krasinski, Danny McBride, Jay Baruchel and Alec Baldwin also star.

The film is due out in the US in May, while it currently looks like the UK will have to wait until September.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Trailer – Henry Cavill & Armie Hammer are classic spy cool

12th February 2015 By Tim Isaac

There’s no doubt that Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer are cool, but both are still in the making as movie stars with real staying power. Cavill has Superman, but he’s yet to have any other major hits, while Hammer has appeared in the likes of Lone Ranger and Mirror Mirror but his star status is yet to stick.

However they’ve both got a great chance of plenty of success this summer with The Man From U.N.C.L.E.. Now the trailer has arrived and it’s got plenty of style and looks like it could be pretty fun.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel”) stars as Napoleon Solo opposite Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) as Illya Kuryakin in director Guy Ritchie’s action adventure “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” a fresh take on the hugely popular 1960s television series.

‘Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” centers on CIA agent Solo and KGB agent Kuryakin. Forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe.’

It’s due out in August.
