The Craft Is Getting A Remake – The 90s witches are returning

14th May 2015 By Tim Isaac

The 1996 movie The Craft wasn’t a huge hit on its cinema release, but since then it’s had a cult following on video and then DVD, with many responding to its story of four teenage girls who start to experiment with witchcraft.

There have been rumours of a remake before, but not its been given real momentum, as Leigh Janiak has come onboard to direct the film. She recently made her debut with the creepy Honeymoon.

The original follows Robin Tunney’s teenager, who has supernatural gifts. She teams up with Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell, and Rachel True and they begin to do witchcraft together, however as they increasingly use their powers for personal gain the magic begins having undesirable effects, particularly on Fairuza Balk’s character.

Although there are bound to be some who adore the original so much they think it shouldn’t be touched, but the truth is its the sort of film that well worth having another stab at for a new generation, who may well respond to its themes if they’re given less of a 90s vibe.

Win The Acclaimed A Most Violent Year On Blu-ray! – Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain star

13th May 2015 By Tim Isaac

The ethics of an honest man collide with the brutal violence of 1980s New York as A Most Violent Year, JC Chandor’s instant classic that was cruelly overlooked during the 2015 awards season, comes to Blu-ray, DVD and digital platforms in the from May 18, 2015 courtesy of Icon Film Distribution.

At a time when New York City is experiencing a spike in criminal activity, small businessman Abel Morales (Oscar Isaac – Inside Llewyn Davis, soon to be seen in the Star Wars and X-Men franchises) fights to make himself a living, support his wife Anna (Jessica Chastain – Interstellar, Zero Dark Thirty) and protect his interests. Always looking for a way to expand his business, Abel nevertheless strives to keep things honest and to do things by the book. However, when he becomes the target of opportunistic thieves, he takes matters into his own hands to track down those responsible. But, in doing so, he also attracts the attention of the Assistant District Attorney (David Oyelowo – Selma, Interstellar) who takes an unwelcome interest in Abel’s business practices…

With support from Alessandro Nivola (American Hustle) and Albert Brooks (Drive), A Most Violent Year is the Great American Crime Drama reimagined – presenting a dark time in New York history through the eyes of a man whose best intentions compete with his rawest instinct to survive.

Crimson Peak Trailer – Into Guillermo Del Toro’s haunted house with Tom Hiddleston & Jessica Chastain

13th May 2015 By Tim Isaac

Normally you can’t keep Guillermo Del Toro from talking about his movies, but he’s been a tiny bit more secretive with Crimson Peak. But the shades of his haunted house are being pulled back with a new trailer.

As you’d expect from the director it certainly looks stylish with Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam and Mia Wasikowska getting a little creepy.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Legendary Pictures’ Crimson Peak, a co-production with Universal Pictures, is a haunting gothic horror story directed by the master of dark fairy tales, Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy series, Pacific Rim), written by del Toro, Matthew Robbins and Lucinda Coxon and starring Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Hunnam.

‘In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds…and remembers.’

It’ll be in cinemas in October.

Jem and the Holograms Trailer – The adaptation of the 80s cartoon rocks in

13th May 2015 By Tim Isaac

Most people in the UK won’t know what Jem And The Holograms is, but Universal is hoping to change that before it’s pre-Christmas release, and to start off we’re getting a trailer. It’s better known in the US, where the 80s carton and toys still has a great cult following.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘As a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, she and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden. In Universal Pictures’ Jem and the Holograms, four aspiring musicians will take the world by storm when they see that the key to creating your own destiny lies in finding your own voice.

‘Directed by Jon M. Chu (Step Up series, G.I. Joe: Retaliation), the musical adventure stars Aubrey Peeples, Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau, Hayley Kiyoko, Ryan Guzman, Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis. Jem and the Holograms, based on the iconic Hasbro animated TV series, is written by Ryan Landels and produced by Chu, Jason Blum for Blumhouse Productions, Scooter Braun for SB Projects, Bennett Schneir, and Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis of Hasbro Studios.’

Nicole Kidman Will Know How to Talk to Girls at Parties – Ruth Wilson, Matt Lucas & Elle Fanning too

13th May 2015 By Tim Isaac

Nicole Kidman is set to reunite with her Rabbit Hole director, John Cameron Mitchell for How To Talk To Girls At Parties. Mitchell is going back behind the camera after a turn in the Broadway production of Hedwig & The Angry Inch, the show he created in the 1990s and which helped make his name.

However How To Talk… is a little different from Hedwig’s tale of a transsexual East German musician, although it keeps the punk vibe, as it’s based on a short story by Neil Gaiman, from his collection, Fragile Things. Variety described the movie as being ‘in the spirit of Romeo and Juliet, but instead of Montagues and Capulets, it is punks and aliens. This is the story of the birth of punk, the exuberance of first love, and the universe’s greatest mystery of all: how to talk to girls at parties.’

Elle Fanning was previously announced for the movie, and as well as Kidman, she’s also just been joined by Ruth Wilson and Matt Lucas.

The film is currently looking for buyers at Cannes, with the hope of shooting in the UK this Autumn.

Diego Luna Up For Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One – As one of the lead characters

13th May 2015 By Tim Isaac

Gareth Edwards is certainly building a great cast for Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, with Felicity Jones, Riz Ahmed and Ben Mendelsohn already onboard. Now it looks like they’ve got some company, as Variety reports that Diego Luna is signing on.

There are too many details on who he’ll play, but it appears he’ll be one of the leads, as part of a rogue band of resistance fighters who unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans and bring new hope to the galaxy. (We’re presuming it’s those stolen plans that end up stowed away in R2D2 at the beginning of A New Hope)

Jones and Ahmed will join him in the attempt to steal those plan, while Mendelsohn will be the villain.

The Star Wars Anthology movies will be standalone films that will expand the screen franchise beyond the Skywalker saga (which include JJ Abrams’ upcoming The Force Awakens), and should arrive in cinemas Decembr 2016.
