The Good Dinosaur Trailer – Pixar brings dinos and humans together

21st July 2015 By Tim Isaac

I’m sure evolutionary scientists would be the first to say that if as asteroid hadn’t wiped out the dinosaurs it’s very unlikely we’d be living alongside them now (indeed, we’d almost certainly not exist as a species), but it’s still a fun idea and one Pixar running with for The Good Dinosaur.

Now the first full trailer has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘”The Good Dinosaur” asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? Pixar Animation Studios takes you on an epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of.’

It’s out in UK cinemas on November 27th.

Star Wars: Episode VIII Wants Benicio Del Toro – He may be a major villain

21st July 2015 By Tim Isaac

Star Wars: The Force Awakens may not be in cinemas until December, but with Star Wars: Episode VIII currently set for release May 2017, they don’t have time to see whether JJ Abrams’ movie is a success before moving forward with its sequel.

Indeed they’re already casting for new roles, with TheWrap reporting that Disney/Lucasfilm has offered a villainous role to Benicio Del Toro. Although nothing has been officially announced, it seems he’s likely to sign on for the movie.

As you’d expect, there’s little info on the plot (we still know fairly little about The Force Awakens), although as he’s being cast now and Episode VIII isn’t due to shoot until either the end of this year of early 2016, there’s speculation that he may be introduced in Force Awakens before becoming more important in the follow-up.

Of course between these two films we also have the standalone movie Rogue One, which is due out December 2016 and follows the mission to steal the Death Star plans, which led to the events of the first Star Wars movie. That film is currently shooting.

Before We Go Trailer – Romance sparks between Chris Evans & Alice Eve

20th July 2015 By Tim Isaac

It is an odd thing but when actors are playing superheroes they often don’t have vast amounts of success outside that franchise. It’s true of Chris Evans, who’s massively popular as Captain America, but his other films haven’t made much of an impact on the box office (his recent Playing It Cool didn’t even get a UK cinema release).

It’s a shame as he certainly has charm on screen.

Before We Go may not be likely to make mountains of cash, but it does look like it may be a rather charming romance with Evans starring alongside Alice Eve.

Chris plays a man who helps out after Eve’s purse is stolen, which ‘sparks a life-changing, nighttime sojourn through New York City.’

Before We Go will be on VOD in the US from July 21st and in cinemas September 4th. No UK date is currently set.

The Gunman (Blu-ray) – Sean Penn turns assassin

19th July 2015 By Tim Isaac

Until recently the prospect of Sean Penn starring in a movie meant that while the film was likely to be a little bit tedious, he would be extremely good in it and the movie would be worth a watch. However, with Gangster Squad, Walter Mitty and The Gunman, he seems to be trying his hand at more standard fare.

Unfortunately though, all the Gunman offers is more of what we’ve seen 1,000 times before. In fact, I almost wonder if in the pact actors make with Hollywood, it includes a clause that makes it compulsory for them to star in at least one movie about an assassin having an existential crisis.

In this one Penn is mercenary sniper Terrier, who manages to take out a Congolese Minister. After the successful hit, to protect himself and his squad he must go into hiding, completely abandoning his former life, including his girlfriend. Years later he returns to Congo, only to discover that his actions caused massive fallout for the whole country, and that very soon there are killers after him. He tries to discover who has put a price on his head, and to do so he must reconnect with those from his former life.

Although with that premise you might think there’d be some space for some interesting Penn-esque left wing politics about the West’s rape of the developing world and the unthinking repercussions our actions, this is a movie from the director of Taken, and as a result any possible depth gets ripped from the movie early on.

Instead there’s a sense that the makers hoped to raise very standard material into something special by hiring an outstanding cast – including Idris Elba, Mark Rylance, Javier Bardem and Ray Winstone – but it actually has the opposite effect. The Gunman makes you wonder why so many great actors could be bothered with something that has little more to offer than the endless parade of straight-to-DVD dick-flick action movies that arrive on shop shelves, complete with dodgy gender politics and a plot that doesn’t quite hold together.

Admittedly Morel does know how to put shootouts and punch-ups together, but Penn seems constantly out of his depth and unsure what he’s doing in the role. The main reason Taken worked so well is that Liam Neeson really could sell the idea of him being this almost super-human, driven, killing machine, but by trying to be a little more realistically human, Penn merely underlines how implausible the whole movie is.

It’s unfortunate as you end up with the tedious aspects we’ve come to expect from Sean Penn movies, but without any of the things that usually make them worth watching.

Overall Verdict: Full of great actors and with a director who’s shown he knows how to do action, but the result is like they’ve bought truffles to add to instant noodles, without realising that the noodles would have been a lot better on their own.
