The 5th Wave Trailer – Chloe Moretz takes on an alien invasion

5th September 2015 By Tim Isaac

Chloe Moretz is having a bit of trouble with aliens in The 5th Wave, which looks like it’s going to be a less bombastic take on what happens when extra-terrestrials attack than we’re used to.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Starring Chloë Grace Moretz and based on the bestseller: In the new film The 5th Wave, four waves of increasingly deadly attacks have left most of Earth decimated. Against a backdrop of fear and distrust, Cassie is on the run, desperately trying to save her younger brother. As she prepares for the inevitable and lethal 5th wave, Cassie teams up with a young man who may become her final hope – if she can only trust him.’

The movie is cue in UK cinemas in January, but you can take a look at the trailer below.

Spectre Gets A New Poster – Daniel Craig is looking cool

3rd September 2015 By Tim Isaac

It’s not long now until the much anticipated new James Bond movie, Spectre, hits cinemas, with an October 26th UK release set, while the US and most other countries will have to wait until November 6th. With that release just a few weeks away, a new – and rather cool – poster has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A cryptic message from the past sends James Bond (Daniel Craig) on a rogue mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, where he meets Lucia Sciarra (Monica Bellucci), the beautiful and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal. Bond infiltrates a secret meeting and uncovers the existence of the sinister organisation known as SPECTRE.

‘Meanwhile back in London, Max Denbigh (Andrew Scott), the new head of the Centre for National Security, questions Bond’s actions and challenges the relevance of MI6, led by M (Ralph Fiennes). Bond covertly enlists Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) and Q (Ben Whishaw) to help him seek out Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), the daughter of his old nemesis Mr White (Jesper Christensen), who may hold the clue to untangling the web of SPECTRE. As the daughter of an assassin, she understands Bond in a way most others cannot.

‘As Bond ventures towards the heart of SPECTRE, he learns of a chilling connection between himself and the enemy he seeks, played by Christoph Waltz.

‘Sam Mendes returns to direct SPECTRE, with Daniel Craig reprising his role as 007 for the fourth time. SPECTRE is produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, from a script by John Logan and Neal Purvis & Robert Wade and Jez Butterworth.’

Cate Blanchett Takes On Lucille Ball Biopic – With Aaron Sorkin scripting

3rd September 2015 By Tim Isaac

Aaron Sorkin must have got a taste for biopics as, after The Social Network and the upcoming Steve Jobs, he’s taking on a movie about US TV comedy legend Lucille Ball, which THR reports has Cate Blanchett set to star.

It seems a great mix of actor and writer for the movie (although it should be not Sorkin has officially signed to script the film next), which has been authorised by Ball’s family, and will have her children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr., as producers.

There’s little info on whether the film will cover all of Ball’s life or a specific period, but she’s certainly long overdue a biopic, as she is arguably the biggest US TV star ever, thanks to I Love Lucy, The Lucy–Desi Comedy Hour, The Lucy Show, Here’s Lucy and Life with Lucy. She was also very active behind the scenes, with her Desilu Studios (which she co-founded with her husband, Desi Arnaz), having been involved with the likes of Star Trek and Mission: Impossible.

The Danish Girl Trailer – Eddie Redmayne is transgender pioneer Lili Elbe

1st September 2015 By Tim Isaac

There’s already a lot of interest in The Danish Girl, which looks set to catch the zeitgeist and the interest in transgender people and issues that has been growing in the public consciousness over the last couple of years. It certainly feels like the right time for a film about a trans* person to find mainstream success.

In The Danish Girl, Eddie Redmayne stars as Lili Elbe, who became one of the first women to undergo sex-reassignment surgery way back in the early 1930s.

Here’s the official synopsis: ‘Based on the book by David Ebershoff, The Danish Girl is the remarkable love story inspired by the lives of Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener (portrayed by Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne [The Theory of Everything] and Alicia Vikander [Ex Machina]), and directed by Academy Award winner Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech, Les Misérables). Lili and Gerda’s marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili’s groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer.’

That doesn’t give a lot of detail, but at film will chart the journey of the person who started out as Danish painter Einar Wegener (Redmayne), and his wife, Gerda. In 1931 Einar is thought to have become the first person in the world to have a sex-change operation, when she became Lili. It’s believed the journey started – at least openly – after Gerda asked Einar to stand in for a female subject that Gerda was supposed to paint. The painting became incredibly popular and Lili began to express who she truly was.

The movie will hit UK cinemas on New Year’s Day 2016, which will ensure it’s ripe for a major awards run.

New Macbeth Trailer – Michael Fassbender & Marion Cotillard take on the Scottish play

1st September 2015 By Tim Isaac

Shakespeare on screen has a very mixed history, but director Justin Kurzel (Snow Town) and stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard are hope they’ve created the definitive movie version of Macbeth – and from the evidence of this trailer, it looks like they could have done it.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The highly anticipated tale of war, ambition, love, murder and betrayal, directed by Justin Kurzel (Snowtown) and starring Academy-Award nominee Michael Fassbender (Twelve Years A Slave, Shame, Hunger) and Academy-Award winner Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night, La Vie En Rose) will see a UK release on OCTOBER 2nd.

‘Macbeth is the story of a fearless warrior and inspiring leader brought low by ambition and desire. A thrilling interpretation of the dramatic realities of the times and a reimagining of what wartime must have been like for one of literature’s most famous and compelling characters, a story of all-consuming passion and ambition set in war torn Scotland.

‘MACBETH is from the producers of The King’s Speech and Shame. MACBETH also stars Paddy Considine (The Bourne Ultimatum), David Thewlis (the Harry Potter series), Sean Harris (Prometheus), Jack Reynor (What Richard Did) and Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby).’

It’ll be in UK cinemas in October.

Nicholas Hoult To Star In JD Salinger Biopic – He’s up for Rebel in the Rye

1st September 2015 By Tim Isaac

Other than for writing Catcher In The Rye, author JD Salinger is mainly known for not writing a huge amount else and also being a bit of a recluse. However now Rebel In The Rye wants to take us into his life and what led to him creating the infamous Holden Caulfield.

Alongside the announcement of the film comes the news that Nicholas Hoult will play the lead role.

It’s promised that the film ‘takes us on a journey into the life and mind of the legendary and secretive author and tells the story of the birth of The Catcher in the Rye. As the author who captivated a generation, JD Salinger soared to the heights of the literary world but left it all behind for a life of seclusion. Through his rebellious youth, the bloody front lines of World War 2, enduring great love and terrible loss, a life of rejection to the pages of The New Yorker, and the PTSD-fueled writer’s block which led to a spiritual awakening.’

Danny Strong (who co-created Empire and wrote the scripts for the likes of Hunger Games: Mockingjay and The Butler) will write and direct the movie. It’s not clear when the movie will shoot, but it’ll be looking for buyers at the Toronto International Film Festival.
