While this movie definitely intriguing and tries to sell itself on the fact it’s based on a previously unproduced screenplay by play-writing legend Tennesse Williams, you can’t help but wonder whether the reason the script has lain dormant for decades is because it isn’t very good. The film stars Bryce Dallas Howard, a headstrong young woman in the roaring 1920s, who rebels by asking the impoverished but handsome son of her father’s caretaker, Jimmy Dobyne (Christ Evans), to escort her to the major social events of the season. However what starts as a business arrangement turns into an impossible love. Although it’s certainly interesting to have a new Williams work after all this time, this trailer suggests it may not the Streetcar Named Desire writer’s lost masterpiece.
New Nine Trailer – And this one tells us a bit about the plot
We’ve mentioned before how the previews for the new Rob Marshall musical, Nine, have concentrated of the tunes and star power, while utterly ignoring the plot. Well, this new trailer tries to redress the balance a little, hinting at how the film will follow film director Guido (Daniel Day Lewis), who reaches a creative and personal crisis of epic proportion, while balancing the numerous women in his life including his wife (Marion Cotillard), his mistress (Penelope Cruz), his film star muse (Nicole Kidman), his confidant and costume designer (Judi Dench), an American fashion journalist (Kate Hudson), the whore from his youth (Fergie) and his mother (Sophia Loren). The film is out on December 18th, but click below for the trailer.
Exam Trailer – First look at taut new Brit thriller
This one looks rather intriguing. The new Brit thriller Exam sees eight top candidates in the final stage of a selection process to join a mysterious organisation. They’re put in a windowless room, where they’re supposed to take a test, however once the rules are outlined (no spoiling of papers or talking to the invigilator or guard), they discover their papers are blank. As the clock counts down towards the end of their exam, they must work together, or perhaps against one another, in order to find out how far they’d go to secure the ultimate job. Although vaguely reminiscent of the Spanish movie Fremat’s Room, it certainly looks like it good be pretty cool. The film, starring Jimi Mistry, Luke Mably and Colin Salmon, hits UK cinemas on January 8th, 2010, but click below to see the trailer.
Avatar Featurette – Making A Scene – 10-minute behind-the-scene look at Cameron’s new movie
I’m quite glad it’s only a couple of weeks until Avatar hits cinemas, as I’m starting to feel I’ve already the movie following the endless featurettes and trailers that have been released. This one is far better than most though. It’s a 10-minute Fox Movie Channel ‘Making A Scene’ featurette, which takes a close look at the making of the movie, with James Cameron and others discussing the complex creation of the movie, including exactly how they used performance capture to create the CG sections of the movie, and how even the flightpaths of some of the creatures were performance captured, using wire models and even horses to give an idea of the movement that was needed. It’s well worth a watch, with plenty of fascinating backstage footage, so click below to take a look. Avatar hits UK cinemas on December 17th.
Babies Trailer – Following kids from around the world
Here’s an interesting idea. Documentarian Thomas Balmes has followed four babies from around the world – the US, Namibia, Mongolia and Japan – from birth to their first steps, showing quite how different and yet unversal the experience of our earliest moments are, all across the world. It may be cute overload, but it’s a great idea and could make a fascinating movie. Babies, which was based on an ideas by Algerian born but France raised writer/director/producer Alain Chabat (Napoleon in Night at the Museum 2), is due out in select US cinemas next February, although there’s no news on when it’s arriving in the UK. Princess Of Mars Trailer – The Asylum milks interest in Avatar and Pixar’s upcoming flick
The Asylum is well known for producing low budget movies that are vaguely similar to big blockbusters, so that they can get them onto DVD and in the shops in time for the major film’s cinema release, and thereby milk its publicity (we wouldn’t like to say they con people into buying their film, but sometimes the covers look so similar you can’t help but think a few people must get confused). This time they’re not just tying their new film, Princess Of Mars into Avatar, saying that Edgar Rice Burrough’s story inspired Jame Cameron’s film, but it’ll also be ready on the shelves when Pixar release their big budget version in a couple of year’s time – by which time Asylum will probably be ready with Princess Of Mars 2. Click below to take a look at the trailer, although we wouldn’t bother to rush out and order a copy. The film will be out in the US soon, although no UK date has been set.
