With Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland getting released on Friday, the BFI has been promoting its restored version of the very first time the story made it to the screen, as a 10-minute one-reel short in 1903. Despite the restoration, some of Cecil Hepworth and Percy Stow’s film is invitably still pretty degraded (and four minutes have disappeared completely), but it’s still very impressive for a movie that’s 107-years-old, especially considering the amount of suprisingly nifty special effects they managed less than a decade after the artform was invented. It’s great to see such care being taken with films that are in danger of being lost forever, so click below to take a look at the 1903 short.
Shelter Trailer – Julianne Moore deals with Jonathan Rhys Meyer’s multiple personalities
Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers team up for this intriguing looking thriller. Moore plays a doctor whose made a career out of rubbishing the idea of multiple personality syndrome, with her testimony ensuring many who’ve tried an insanity defence were convicted of murder and given the death sentence. However her ideas are shaken when she meets Adam (Rhys Meyer), who’s disturbing case – where it seems all his supposed personalities are murder victims – leads her into increasing danger and causes her to question her belief in both science and God. Although the trailer is cut together like a generic thriller, it’s an intriguing premise, as there are indeed many arguments over whether multiple personality disorder is real, and also what causes it – even if this seems to be taking it in a slightly supernatural direction. New Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time Trailer – Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arteron kick ass
Although I’m not sure why everyone in mythological Persia needs to talk with an English accent, there’s little doubt that Disney is keen to sell Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time on its action and special effects, which certainly look like they’re going to be spectacular. This new trailer shows off all computer graphics have to offer, as Jake Gyllenhaal’s Dastan teams up with Gemma Arterton’s Tamina to stop an evil vizier unleashing the Sands Of Time, which will destroy the kingdom. Click below to take a look at all the sandy mayhem. Prince of Persia hts UK cinemas on May 28th.
Tangled – Early Teaser Trailer – First look at Disney’s CG Rapunzel treat
Disney certainly seem to want to keep the mystery around their first foray into trying to bring their classic fairytale tradition to the CG arena. Although previously known as Rapunzel, it’s now changed its name to Tangled, and will follow the long-haired princess as she escapes from her tower and goes on the run. However, despite opening in November, no proper stills have been released from the film (which is said to give a classic animation look to computer graphics), and even this early teaser trailer, due to be included on the US Princess & The Frog DVD, doesn’t show you much more than her tower. Anyway, click below to take a look.
The Joneses Trailer – Demi Moore and David Duchovny fake a family
A romantic comedy with Demi Moore and David Duchony might not sound that appetising, but The Joneses doesn’t look like it’ll be too bad. The duo play the mother and father of a seemingly perfect family who move into an upscale neighbourhood. However while they draw admiring glances for their trend-setting ways, what their neighbours don’t know is that they’re not a real family. They are actually employees of a stealth marketing organisation, who trying to get rich people to buy into the products that make the Joneses’ life seem so perfect. It’s a neat idea for a film, and while no UK release is set as yet, it’s out in the US in April. Click below to watch the trailer.
Birdemic Trailer – The new best worst film ever made?
I’m feeling a bit like a trailblazer at the moment when it comes to Birdemic, as I was pointing out how unbelievably awful, in a I’m-not-sure-whether-this-is-an-elaborate-hoax way, it looked months ago. And now, in the past few days, much of the rest of the internet seems to have caught up. Unfortunately I can’t claim credit for this, as it’s the fact that Severin films recently picked up the movie for a tongue-in-cheek US release that’s caused most of the interest (after director James Nguyen drove around the Sundance Film Festival in a truck covered in dead birds).
Then trendy mags like Vice picked up on it (calling it the ‘New Best Worst Movie Ever’) and comedians such as Patton Oswalt have been showing it to everyone they can think of, just because they can’t believe it exists. If you’re wondering whether I’m just being hyperbolic, take a look at the new trailer below to see some truly shocking effects and acting, although for the full jaw-agape awfulness of what happens when you try to use clip art instead of special effects, take a look at the older trailer. It’s already drawing comparisons to films of such legendary badness as Troll 2 and The Room, which suggests it really is as bad as it looks.
So come on then, when’s this coming to the UK? We need to start a campaign!
