Small Town Saturday Night is the sort of film that would almost certainly have been completely ignored if it weren’t for the fact that between agreeing to appear in it and its release, star Chris Pine has become a far bigger name thanks to Star Trek. Even so it’s just gone straight to DVD in the US, suggesting that despite the presence of Pine, it’s not much cop. He plays Rhett Ryan, who’s about to head off to Nashville, but his dreams conflict with the needs of his girlfriend. There’s no news on when it might reach the UK, but click below for the trailer.
The Illusionist Trailer – Take a look at Sylvain Chomet’s follow-up to Belleville Rendez-vous
Sylvain Chomet beguiled the world a few years ago with the beautifully animated Belleville Rendez-vous, and now he’s back with The Illusionist, which is based on a screenplay the legendary comedy actor and director Jacques Tati wrote before he died. Tati seems to have channeled his own experiences into the film, as it’s about a magician whose brand of entertainment is being eclipsed by emerging rock stars and is forced to accept increasingly obscure assignments in fringe theatres, garden parties and bars, However, whilst performing in a village pub off the west coast of Scotland, he encounters Alice, an innocent young girl who believes his tricks are real, and who will change his life forever. The film is currently scheduled for UK release on August 20th, but click below for the trailer.
Heartbreaker Trailer – The charming French rom com gets a new promo
Unusually for a French romantic comedy, Heartbreaker has been getting a lot of buzz ahead of its UK release on July 2nd. Romain Duris plays Alex, a charming, funny, effortlessly cool guy who offers a professional service – to break up relationships for a fee. He’s hired by the father of the bride to split up Juliette (Vanessa Paradis) and Jonathan (Andrew Lincoln) only a few days before their wedding. However as he races to break up this seemingly perfect couple, he discovers to his own cost that when it comes to love, the perfect plan doesn’t exist.
Legend Of The Guardians Trailer – Beautiful new look at Zack Snyder’s animation
If what we’ve seen so far is anything to go by, Legend Of The Guardians is well in the running to be the most beautiful looking movie of the year. While we’ve had a teaser and a featurette before, now the CG animated film has got a proper trailer, and it’s absolutely gorgeous. While director Zach Snyder will have had to dial down the violence from what he gave us in 300 and Watchmen, he’s still obviously got an eye for visuals. The movie is based on the first three books in Karen Lasky’s series, about young barn owl Soren. He gets kidnapped by the owls of St. Aggie’s, which is meant to be an orphanage but actually brainwashes owlets into becoming soldiers. Soren and his new friends escape to the island of Ga’Hoole, to assist its noble, wise owls who fight the army being created by the wicked rulers of St. Aggie’s. Click below to take watch the traier. Legend Of The Guardians hits UK cinemas on October 15th.
Never Let Me Go Trailer – Haunting promo for Mark Romanek’s dystopian new film
There’s certainly a lot of promise around Never Let Me Go. It’s based on the Booker prize shortlisted novel by Kazuo Ishiguro (The Remains Of The Day), directed by One Hour Photo’s Mark Romanek, has a screenplay by Alex Garland (The Beach, 28 Days Later) and stars Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan, Sally Hawkins, Andrew Garfield and Charlotte Rampling. The plot is about a group of children who grow up in a seemingly idyllic boarding school, but who are actually clones, ‘bred’ to provide organ donations. As they become adults, the difficulties of their situation becomes ever more pressing, especially as they are designed to eventually ‘complete’, that is, to die. Now a haunting first trailer has been released, which sees the film set in a world that looks like the 1950s and plays on the love angle aspect of the plot. Click below to take a look.
Tamara Drewe Trailer – Gemma Arterton and Stephen Frears take on the graphic novel
Normally the words ‘graphic novel’ bring to mind images of sci-fi and thriller plot, but Tamara Drewe is something rather different, a graphic novel aimed largely at women, which is essentially a modern day update of Thomas Hardy’s Far From The Madding Crowd, in which sexy flirt Drewe returns to her small country village after completely transforming herself through plastic surgery and a new look. She stirs up dark passions amongst the locals, which leads to tragedy. Now the first trailer for Stephen Frear’s movie version has been released (which includes French subtitles but is in English), and shows a dark-haired Gemma Arterton causing trouble in the English countryside. The film premiered at Cannes and is currently scheduled for release in the UK on September 10th. Click below for the trailer.
