It’s astonishing to think it’s 50 full years since Alfred Hitchcock first terrified audiences with Psycho, introducing the world to Norman Bates and his mother obsession. To celebrate the anniversary the film got a small cinema release earlier this year and now it’s preparing for its Blu-ray debut, showing us exactly what the film looks like restored and remastered in HD, with 5.1 surround sound and loads of special features. The disc arrives in shops on August 8th, but until then, you can whet you appetite with the new Psycho Blu-ray trailer below.
Let Me In Teaser Arrives – How’s the Let The Right One In remake shaping up?
Despite promises that they’re not just going to rehash the much praised Scandinavian film and that they’ve gone back to the original book, there are still a lot of people who don’t like the idea of an English-language remake of the teen vampire drama, Let The Right One In. However now the first teaser trailer for the Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) directed Let Me In has arrived, giving us an initial taste of Kodi Smit McPhee and Chloe Moretz in what looks like it could be a very stylish and creepy movie. Moretz play Abby, a quiet girl who moves into a house near the bullied and lonely Owen (McPhee). The two become friends, however it turns out Abby is a vampire. Rango Trailer – Finally a proper look at Gore Verbinski’s odd animation
A couple of weeks ago we had a bizarre, rather surreal teaser and yesterday a poster, but now thankfully we get our first proper look at Gore Verbinski’s animated Rango, which features the voice of Johnny Depp as a pet chameleon having an indenity crisis, who heads off on an adventure into the desert. It does look slightly odd but potentially very funny and it’s certainly beautifully animated. Rango will hit cinemas next spring.
Paranormal Activity 2 Teaser Trailer – What’s coming next?
Although the jury is still out on whether a sequel to Paranormal Activity will work, especially given the unexpected nature of the first one and the increbily short production schedule, which will see Paranormal Activity 2 in cinemas this Halloween, the new trailer is certainly creepy. It looks like they’re keeping with the homemade footage feel of the first film, and bigging up the night-vision, where all manner of scary things could happen. If the film, directed by Tod Williams, can all be like this trailer, it’ll be great, but I still have my doubts whether it Paranormal Activity can work for another go around.
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Trailer – Will Voldemort finally manage to kill Harry?
Warner Bros sure aren’t shy about presenting the final two Harry Potter movies as just about the most important thing that’s happened since the end of World War II, but with the film series now the highest grossing movie franchise ever, having made billions at the box office and on DVD, you can understand why they might feel confident there are a lot of people out there waiting to see what happens in the end. This first proper trailer (not counting a couple of sneak teasers we’ve had previously), is certainly action-packed, and it’s good to see plenty of Voldemort, who’s spent six films being the main villain, even though he’s hardly had any screen time – but that will change with Deathly Hallows. Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part I hits cinemas in November, while Part II arrives July 2011, and both will be in 3D, having been converted in post-production. Master Motivator Trailer – Take a glimpse at the new Brit short championing over-50s in film
It’s always good to see people trying to challenge the status quo in films, and one of the biggest problems in the industry is ageism. A couple of months ago we wrote about how rare it is for mainstream films to concentrate on older characters, and it’s just as bad behind-the-scenes, where if you haven’t made your name by the age of 40, the battle becomes much, much harder. However it seems strange that with an aging population, film isn’t trying to address what is becoming an ever bigger and more cash-rich block of people.
It seems a 47-year-old screenwriter and producer from Manchester called Janet Harrison feels the same way. So rather than just accepting things as they are and that the only thing anyone is interested in is young people, she set out to make a short film, largely using people over 50 both in front of and behind the camera, with the result being Master Motivator.
The likes of John Henshaw (59), Mr Motivator (58), and Phoenix Nights actress Enid Dunn (65), along with director Noreen Kershaw (59), all gave up their time for free to make the six-minute short a reality. The tongue in cheek message of the film is that anyone can achieve great things at any time of life and this is mirrored by two of its stars, John Henshaw, previously a bin-man who only started acting at 40 and Enid Dunn, who entered the profession at the tender age of 54. The film tells the story of a care home assistant, who has a secret ambition to become a motivational speaker.
Master Motivator will premiere at the Manchester Comedy Store on July 14th before heading off on the festival circuit. While even the makers admit the low budget film is a little rough around the edges, all credit has to go to them for challenging the ageist stereotypes. Click below to take a look at the trailer.
