Red State Teaser Trailer – Welcome to a very different Kevin Smith

24th December 2010 By Tim Isaac

Red State always sounded like a very different sort of film for Kevin Smith, and if this trailer is anything to go by, it really will be a major departure for the director. Tense, eerie and promising plenty of horror, it suggests it may live up to Smith’s promise that it’s “so bleak that it makes The Dark Knight look like Strawberry Shortcake”. The trailer was released as part of Smith’s Smodcast, but you can watch it by clicking below. The film itself sees a group of misfits encountering an extreme fundametalist church, and getting way more than they bargained for when they come across the hate-filled Abin Cooper. It should be in cinemas in the spring.

Source Code – UK Trailer – Jake Gyllenhaal keeps reliving an explosion in Duncan Jones’ latest

24th December 2010 By Tim Isaac

Even if it wasn’t directed by Duncan Jones, Source Code would be an intriguing proposition, but with the Moon helmer on-board, it’s even more interesting, if only to see how he’ll do with a more Hollywood budget. The neat sci-fi premise sees Jake Gyllenhaal waking up on train, not knowing how he got there, and then a few minutes later getting blown up in a bombing. However he’s actually a soldier who’s part of a programme that can send people back into the last eight minutes of someone’s life, and so Jake is sent back again, trying to find out who’s responsible for the explosion, while also falling for a fellow passenger, played by Michelle Monahan, who causes him to want to change events, rather than simply investigate them. Yep, sounds like we need to prepare for trouble with time travel paradoxes, which Jeffrey Wright’s character seems keen to prevent! The film hits cinemas on April 22nd, but click below for the new UK trailer.

Rango Featurette – Natural Acting Experience – How Johnny Depp got turned into a CG chameleon

24th December 2010 By Tim Isaac

Using live action footage as a reference for animators has been around since the time of Snow White. However it seems with Rango, director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of thre Caribbean) went a little further, getting the likes of Johnny Depp and Bill Nighty onto a soundstage and then filming much of the movie on simple sets, so the animators really had something to work with once they started building the CG, animal-filled world. The newly released featurette, Natural Acting Abilities, which you can see below, shows you just how much of Depp was incorporated into his chameleonic character in the movie. And if nothing else, it certainly looks like they had fun. Rango is a pet chameleon having an indenity crisis, who heads off on an adventure into the desert. He wants to be a swashbuckling hero, and is forced to become that – despite his lack of experience – when he enters a Western town plagued by bandits. The film will be in cinemas next spring.

I Am Number Four Extended Trailer – New look at the upcoming alien sci-fi drama

23rd December 2010 By Tim Isaac

As it clocks in at less than three minutes, I’m not entirely sure why this classes as an ‘extended’ trailer, other than that it featrues different footage to the theatrical version. However the more I see, the more intrigued I am by this teen sci-fi drama, which seems rather Twilight but far darker and more action packed at the same time. The movie is about a group of nine young people from a planet called Lorien who have been attacked by a hostile race from another world. The youngsters and their guardians evacuate to earth, where three are killed. The protagonist, a Lorien boy, Number 4 (Alexx Pettyfer), hides in Paradise, Ohio, as a human and tries to evade his predators. The film also stars Glee’s Dianna Agron, Kevin Durand and Timothy Olyphant. It hits UK cinemas on February 18th, 2011, but click below for the extended trailer.

Second The Lincoln Lawyer Trailer – Is it time to take Matthew McConaughey seriously again?

23rd December 2010 By Tim Isaac

We’ve got used to Matthew McConaughey just picking paycheque rom-coms that are instantly forgettable, but it seems he might have chosen to challenge himself with The Lincoln Lawyer, and show that his early promise wasn’t just a fluke. This second trailer suggests the movie may be a lot more interesting than it initially seemed, and could be a bit of a corker. Mickey Haller (McConaughey) is a Los Angeles criminal defense attorney who operates out of the back of his Lincoln sedan. Haller has spent most of his career defending garden-variety criminals, until he lands the case of his career: defending Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillippe), a Beverly Hills playboy accused of rape and attempted murder. But the seemingly straightforward case suddenly develops into a deadly game of survival for Haller. With Marisa Tomei, William H. Macy, John Leguizamo and Michael Pena also in the cast, it could be one to look out for when it arrives in cinemas on March 18th, 2011. Click below for the new trailer.
