Saorise Ronan is a killing machine, or at least she is in this new interantional trailer for Hanna, which reunites her with the director of Atonement, Joe Wright. She plays a 14-year-old girl raised in the wilds of Finland by her ex-CIA dad (Eric Bana) to be a cold-blooded killing machine. After being sent out on a mission, she must elude agents who are sent stop her by a ruthless intelligence operative with secrets of her own (Cate Blanchett). As she nears her ultimate target, Hanna faces startling revelations about her existence and unexpected questions about her humanity. The US trailer was kind of intriguing, but this internations promo, which features new footage and a better sense of the film’s mix of action, drama, ideas and a teen find herself, definitely makes Hanna one to watch out for. Win Win Trailer – Paul Giamatti teaches wrestling
Win Win was one of the best received movies at this year’s Sundance, with Paul Giamatti as struggling attorney Mike Flaherty, who moonlights as a high school wrestling coach. He becomes legal guardian of an elderly client in an attempt to help keep his practice afloat. When the client’s teenage grandson runs away from home and shows up on his grandfather’s doorstep, Mike’s family life and his wrestling team are turned upside down. Mike’s win-win proposition turns into something much more complicated than he ever bargained for. From Tom McCarthy, acclaimed writer/director of The Visitor and The Station Agent, the film should hit cinemas later this year. Click below for the trailer.
Kung Fu Panda 2 – Super Bowl TV Spot – Po gets back in the fighting spirit
Normally companies keep their Super Bowl TV ads secret, so there’s maximum impact when the game actually airs (it’s the highest rated telecast of the year in the US, so companies really go all out to impress audiences with their adverts, which have been almost as big a part of the broadcast as the game). However while the match isn’t until Sunday, the Kung Fu Panda 2 spot has already shown up online, with Po fitting a bit of burping and fighting into 30 seconds. The film arrives in cinemas on June 17th, but click below for the Super Bowl ad.
Soul Surfer Trailer – AnnaSpohia Robb gets back to surfing after a shark attack!
A couple of weeks ago we poster a teaser trailer for Soul Surfer, which was nearly all beautiful young things riding the waves and barely hinted at the fact this was a movie about a woman whose arm gets bitten off by a shark! However now the proper trailer has arrived, which reveals a lot more, not least that the likes of Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt are in the flick. The movie itself tell the true story of Bethany Hamilton (AnnaSophia Robb), an up and coming teen surfer who survived after a shark bit off one of her arms. She then fought her way back to become a top surfer. It should be in cinemas this spring, but click below for the trailer.
The Conspirator Trailer – Robert Redford takes on Lincoln’s assassination
It’s kind of like a 19th Century version of Oliver Stone’s JFK, with Robert Redford directing a movie about the aftermath of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. However I don’t think Redford’s going to say John Wilkes Booth didn’t do it, and that it was the CIA/Cubans/Russians/Mafia, or that there was a second shooter on a grassy knoll. However it does concern Mary Surratt (Robin Wright), who was charged in connection with the conspiracy to murder the President. James McAvoy plays Frederick Aiken, a lawyer who reluctantly agrees to defend Surratt and comes to believe that she is innocent of the charges against her (which revolved around the fact Booth and his accomplice, David Herold, were given firearms at a tavern she owned as they made their escape following the shooting – but whether Surratt knew about this is debatable). The trailer certainly sells the movie as a thriller rather than as a period drama, and it does look like it could be pretty good. Expect it in cinemas this spring.
Watch Kevin Smith Talk Up His Red State Plans – The director’s full Sundance talk about why he’s self distributing
There’s been a huge amount of interest all across the web in Kevin Smith’s plans to self-distribute his new movie, Red State. Yesterday we reported on how he took to the stage at Sundance following the world premiere screening of his flick to announce plans for a premium priced road tour of the movie, which will see it play one night in various US cities in March and April – followed by a Q&A with Smith himself – before a more conventional release in October. Much of his reasoning behind this is because he’s fed up with the way movies are ditributed, particularly the fact it normally costs a huge amount more to advertise one of his movies than it does to make it. So he wants to try something different, eventually morphing himself from director to producer and distributor, with plans to find a way to get indie movies to the public in an effective but comparatively inexpensive way. His ideas have provoked various reactions, from outright support to others saying Smith may be getting a bit too big for his boots. But perhaps it’d help you to make up your own mind if you could hear what Smith actually said! Well now you can, as we’ve embedded a Youtube video below, posted by someone who recorded the director’s entire Sundance talk about why he’s doing what he’s doing, so click below to take a look (but just beware, it’s a chunky 26 minutes!).
