Following the excellent Rabbit Proof Fence in 2002, about the old Aussie policy of removing many Aborigine children from their parents to be ‘civilised’ and trained up as staff for white people, comes another movie about a rather dodgy policy concerning dispossed kids that involved Australia. This time us Brits are involved too, as it’s about the deportation of thousands of poor UK kids from care homes in Blighty all the way to Australia and other Commonwealth nations, mainly to save money. Many were told their parents were dead when in fact they weren’t, and promised a life of sunshine and oranges, when what many got was severe abuse, hard labour and a life in institutions. The film follows Margaret Humphreys (Emily Watson), the woman who almost single-handedly brought the issue into the public gaze and managed to reunite hundreds of families. New Trust Trailer – Clive Owen and Catherine Keener deal with online sex predators
Having screened last year at the Toronto Film Festival to a generally positive responce, Trust is gearing up for US release on April 1st, although it’s not yet been confirmed when it’ll reach the UK. Directed by David Schwimmer, but far from the comedic work he’s concentrated on as both an actor and helmer, Trust stars Clive Owen and Catherine Keener. as two parents who discover that the guy their daughter has been chatting to on the net is considerably older than he said, and that something terrible has happened when she goes to meet him. The Wicker Tree Trailer – First look at Robin Hardy’s belated Wicker Man follow-up
Previously known as Cowboys For Christ, The Wicker Tree has been renamed so it’s closer to The Wicker Man, the movie it’s the ‘spiritual sequel’ to. Robin Hardy is once more at the helm (it’s only the third film he’s made, the other being Wicker Man and 1989’s The Fantasist), based on his own novel about a group of Texan missionaries who set off to Scotland to spread the word of God. They come across a community that as part of its May Day celebrations chooses its May Queen as well as a boy called The Laddie. They all have a party and then the next day the Pagan goings on take a sinister turn when the real reason for choosing the Laddie is revealed. While not a direct Wicker Man sequel, the parallels are clear, not least the presence of Christopher Lee, who’s apparently credited as ‘Old Man’, but many assume it’s a cameo for Lord Summerisle (lee was supposed to have a bigger part, but it was hacked down after he suffered an injury). There’s still no release date set, but take a look at the trailer below.
Submarine Trailer – Get a glimpse of Richard Ayoade’s much anticipated Brit flick
Ever since it started filming last year there’s been a fair amount of buzz about Submarine, which grew after it screened at the London Film Festival and Sundance, with some even going as far as to call it the best British movie in years. It’s out in cinemas on March 18th, but now the trailer has arrived. The producers of Warp Films (This Is England, Four Lions) and actor and director Richard Ayoade (IT Crowd) present a comedy which follows a 15-year old boy with two objectives: to lose his virginity before his next birthday, and to stop his mother (Sally Hawkins) from leaving his father for a motivational speaker (Paddy Considine)
Ceremony Trailer – Michael Angarano gets obsessed with Uma Thurman
As the tagline says, ‘She’s the love of his life. She just doesn’t know it yet.’ That’s the setup for Ceremony, which sees Michael Angarano play a young man who convinces his former best friend to spend a weekend with him to rekindle their friendship at an elegant beachside estate owned by a famous documentary filmmaker (Lee Pace). However it becomes clear that Sam is secretly infatuated with the filmmaker’s fiancee, Zoe (Uma Thurman), and that his true intention is to thwart their impending marriage, something she’s not exactly too happy about. Click below to take a look at the trailer. The film should be released later this year.
Take Me Home Tonight Red Band trailer – The 80s set comedy gets boobs and rude words
We’ve already had a green band trailer for the 80s set comedy Take Me Home Tonight, but things get ruder and certainly with more boobage in the red band promo. However you’ll have to judge for yourself whether the jokes about someone in a wheelchair are funny or just plain tasteless and slightly mean spirited. The film stars Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Teresa Palmer and Dan Fogler, and sees MIT grad Matt Franklin (Topher Grace) who should be working his way to the top of the corporate ladder, feeling directionless and confounding family and friends by taking a part-time job behind the counter of a video store. But Matt’s silent protest against maturity comes to a screeching halt once his unrequited high school crush, Tori Frederking (Teresa Palmer), walks into the store. When she invites him to an epic, end-of-summer party, Matt thinks he finally might have a chance with the girl of his dreams. With his cynical twin sister Wendy (Anna Faris) and best friend Barry (Dan Fogler), Matt embarks on a once-in-a-lifetime evening. From stealing a car to a marriage proposal to an indescribable, no-holds-barred dance-off, these friends share experiences that will change the course of their lives on one unforgettable night in the Go-Go ’80s. The film will be in cinemas next spring, but click below for the trailer.
