The first trailer for Tom Hanks new directorial project, in which he also co-stars with Julia Roberts has now arrived, showing just why Hanks is so likeable. Hanks plays affable, amiable Larry Crowne, who was a superstar team leader at the big-box company where he’s worked since his time in the Navy, until the unexpectedly fired him. Underwater on his mortgage and unclear on what to do with his suddenly free days, Larry heads to his local college to start over. There he becomes part of a colourful community of outcasts, also-rans and the overlooked, all trying to find a better future for themselves. In his public-speaking class, Larry develops an unexpected crush on his teacher, Mercedes Tainot (Roberts), who has lost as much passion for teaching as she has for her husband. The film is set for UK release on July 1st, but click below for the trailer.
New Bridesmaids Trailer – A different sort of wedding comedy
If you make a film called Bridesmaids, it’s little surprise that most people think it’s just going to be generic rom-com fluff pandering to the lowest common denominator female audience, and bordering on sexist. After all, that’s what 99% of wedding comedies are. However after a ‘work in progress’ screening as SXSW, critics came away impressed by quite how different and refreshing Bridesmaids is, and predicting it could become quite a big hit. It’s billed as a kind of female Hangover, taking the traditional chick flick conept od the run up to a wedding and going far more gross-out with it. Wiig leads the way as Annie, who’s asked by her best friend (Maya Rudolph) to be her maid of honour, however when the other bridesmaids (Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper) get involved things get ever more complicated. It’s due in cinemas this May, but click below for the brand new trailer.
Red Dog Trailer – Aussie canine fun with Josh Lucas
I know this trailer is meant to be about all the fun and sweetness of man’s relationship with his canine chums, but to me, I couldn’t help wondering how bloody miserable it must have been in the Aussie outback in the 1970s if the only thing they had to rally around was a stray dog who wandered all over the place. Red Dog, starring Josh Lucas, is based on the true story of a Kelpie/Cattle dog cross that was well-known for his travels through Western Australia’s Pilbara region. There is a statue in his memory in Dampier, which is one of the towns to which he often returned (and does suggest that yes indeed, a dog is all the people there had back then). He had several owners and travelled on his own a lot, and became so famous that banks even used his for their advertising. Click below for the trailer.
Sucker Punch Animated Short – Trenches – Into Zack Snder’s strange fantasy world
Without knowing the context, it has to be said this new animated short, tied into Zack Snder’s upcoming Sucker Punch, is more than a little mysterious. It starts off all First World War, goes sci-fi, then turns slightly Frankenstein, before things go steampunk battle – and all in the space of three minutes! It’s worth a watch, even if it’s not clear how it relates to the movie. Click below to take a look. The film hits cinemas on March 25th.

Source Code – The First Five Minutes – Jake Gyllenhaal gets very confused and then blown up in Duncan Jones’ flick!
Source Code is undoubtedly one of the most intriguing films coming up, with Jake Gyllenhaal waking up on train, not knowing how he got there, and then a few minutes later getting blown up in a bombing. However he’s actually a soldier who’s part of a programme that can send people back into the last eight minutes of someone’s life, and so Jake is sent back again, trying to find out who’s responsible for the explosion, while also falling for a fellow passenger, played by Michelle Monahan, who causes him to want to change events, rather than simply investigate them. Now the first five minutes of Duncan Jones’ film have shown up online, giving us a glimpse into the confusing world and explosive world Jake is thrust into. The poor chap really has no clue what the hell is going on, although the sequence is very good at setting up tiny events that could prove important as Jake’s made to relive the bombing over and over again. Who knows what is really going on? Source Code hits the UK on April 1st. Click below to take a look at the beginning of the flick.
X-Men: First Class Russian Trailer – New mutant-riffic footage from the upcoming flick
A new Russian Trailer has shown up online for X-Men: First Class, featuring plenty of new footage Matthew Vaughn’s mutant prequel, including Hank McCoy (Nicholas Hoult) turning into the blue Beast and Banshee using his sonic blast. It all looks pretty cool, even if there aren’t perhaps as many effects as you’d expect for a big summer movie – but fear not, it’s probably because with the movie on a tight schedule, not many are ready yet.
Here’s the film’s synopsis: ‘X-Men: First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.’
X-Men: First Class hits cinemas June 3rd, 2011.
