Phantom Trailer – David Duchovny & Ed Harris go submarining

28th December 2012 By Tim Isaac

Submarines are always intriguing bu difficult places to set movies – they’re inherently claustrophobic, dangerous and a little creepy. Add in the fact that many sumbarines have nuclear weapons onboard and you’ve got a great set-up for a film.

That’s the background for Todd Robinson’s Phantom, which stars Ed Harris as Demi, a Soviet submarine captain who wants to retire but gets forced to go on a top secret mission. He probably shouldn’t be going, as Demi suffers from seizures that alter his perception of reality. His mission goes awry when a rogue KGB group, led by named Bruni David (Duchovny), tries to takes control of the sub. Demi begins to think that he’s been deliberately set up fail and take the blame for a nuclear disaster that could start a war. Now he’s the only one who can stop it.

No UK release is currently set but it reaches the US on March 1st.

Aftershock Trailer – Eli Roth has a Chilean earthquake to deal with

22nd December 2012 By Tim Isaac

If this trailer is anything to go by, you don’t want to be in Chile after an earthquake. Hostel director Eli Roth stars as a one of group of travelers who are in an underground nightclub when a massive earthquake hits, and quickly learn that reaching the surface is just the beginning of their nightmare.

The movie was actually shot in areas that were still devastated from the real 8.8 magnitude quake that hit Chile in 2010, although hopefully the aftermath of that disaster wasn’t as gory as this, at least in terms of people running around trying to kill one another.

No UK release date is currently set, but the Nicolás López directed movie should arrive sometime next year.

The Place Beyond the Pines Trailer – Ryan Gosling turns to crime to raise his kid

22nd December 2012 By Tim Isaac

The Place Beyond The Pine reunites Ryan Gosling with Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance, to tell the tale of Luke (Gosling), a professional motorcycle rider who turns to bank robberies to support his newborn son. However, when he crosses paths with a rookie police officer (Bradley Cooper), their violent confrontation spirals into a tense generational feud. Rose Byrne, Eva Mendes, Ray Liotta and Dane DeHaan also star.

Now the trailer for the movie has arrived, which to be honest make the film look more like Drive than Blue Valentine, taking a genre pic in an unusual direction. The movie premiered recently at the Toronto International Film Festival to good although not rapturous reviews.

It arrives in the UK on April 12th.
