For a couple of years now Sony has been developing a reimagining of Jumanji, and there’s even been talk of trying to turn it into a giant interconnected franchise. Now it looks like they’re ready to move forward with the first part of their plan, as Variety reports that Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson are being sought by the studio for the lead roles.
It certainly doesn’t seem like it’s a done deal yet though, as both men are very busy and with Sony eyeing an autumn shoot, they will have to work out whether they can fit the movie in. There’s still not a huge amount of info on what direction this new Jumanji movie will take the movie, but with Johnson and Hart involved, it sounds like it’ll be a more broadly comic adventure. Presumably though it will still be based around the basic concept of a board game where what happens in the game also happens in real life, which causes havoc when the jungle starts to erupt into reality.
It also suggests that Sony must think Hart and Johnson make a great team, and that their work on this year’s Central Intelligence is good enough that it’s worth re-teaming them as soon as possible. However, they will have to work out the scheduling if it’s going to happen.
