Jude Law Will Play The Male Lead Opposite Brie Larson In Captain Marvel

22nd November 2017 By Tim Isaac

It’s well over a year since Brie Larson signed on to play Captain Marvel on the big screen. However, it’s only now that Marvel and directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have started to build the cast around her. Ben Mendelsohn recently signed up to play the villain, and now Variety reports that Jude Law is in talks to play the male lead in the movie.

Different incarnations of Captain Marvel have been both male and female in the comics, but for the movies they are concentrating on Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. The resulting alteration imbues her with the super powers of strength, energy projection and flight.

Law will play ‘Doctor Walter Lawson, a.k.a. Mar-Vell, who becomes a mentor of sorts to Danvers as she tries to figure out her new powers.’

Interestingly the movie is planned as a prequel to most of the other Marvel movies, as it will be set in the 1990s. It’s also thought Samuel L. Jackson may show up as a younger Nick Fury. It’s due out March 2019.

Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck Will Direct Captain Marvel

19th April 2017 By Tim Isaac

Last June Brie Larson signed on to play the title role in the superhero flick, Captain Marvel. At the time the studio was supposedly narrowing in on their choice of director, but it’s only now that they’ve found the people they want, as Variety reports that Half Nelson and Mississippi Grind’s Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are set to helm.

While Marvel met with various female directors last summer, they eventually decided to wait until the script was in better shape before honing in on their final choice.

Danvers has been part of The Avengers in the comics, and so should be a good fit as Marvel prepares for a future when the likes of Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth may want to leave the cinematic universe. Inside Out‘s Meg LeFauve and Guardians of the Galaxy Nicole Perlman have come up with the script. The film is due out March 2019.

Oscar-Winner Brie Larson In Early Talks To Play Captain Marvel

2nd June 2016 By Tim Isaac

brie-larsonThere’s been a fair amount of criticism of Marvel Studios for the fact it’s largely concentrated on male superheroes, while refusing to give even popular female characters, such as Black Widow, a movie of her own (Agent Carter got her own TV show, but that didn’t happen until Marvel was almost forced to see the potential, and it certainly wasn’t in cinemas). However, they are planning to at least slightly redress the balance with Captain Marvel.

Different incarnations of the character have been both male and female in the comics, but for the movies they are concentrating on ‘Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. The resulting alteration imbues her with the super powers of strength, energy projection and flight.’

Danvers has been part of The Avengers in the comics, and so should be a good fit as Marvel prepares for a future when the likes of Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth may want to leave the cinematic universe.

Now it seems the studio has found the person they want to play the title character, with THR reporting that Oscar-winning Room actress Brie Larson is in early talks for the role. It’s unclear at the moment how likely it is she will sign on, and it may depend on who the director is, as it appears Marvel is keen to find a female lenser as quickly as they can, with the likes of Niki Caro (Whale Rider) and Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) being near the top of the list.

Captain Marvel is die out March 2019.
