Blade Runner 2049 (Blu-ray Review)

6th February 2018 By Tim Isaac

Starring: Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas, Robin Wright, Jared Leto
Directed By: Denis Villeneuve
Running Time: 164 mins
BBFC Certificate: 15
UK Release Date: February 5th 2018 (UK)

Our Score

When it was first announced that a sequel to Blade Runner was in the works, it seemed like a bad idea. Ridley Scott and Harrison Ford are on a bit of a roll revisiting their greatest hits, following Scott’s Alien Prequels and Ford’s return to Indiana Jones and Star Wars. However, Blade Runner was such a singular movie – and one so far removed from the modern blockbuster – that it seemed a wholly bizarre idea to now be making a sequel.

Scott then handed the directing reigns across to Denis Villeneuve, which gave some guarded optimism following Sicario and Arrival, but it still seemed ill judged. [Read more…]

New Blade Runner 2049 Trailer – There’s a replicant mystery for Harrison Ford & Ryan Gosling

17th July 2017 By Tim Isaac

Returning to the world of Blade Runner makes for an interesting trailer challenge for the studio’s marketing department. For many the film is one of the true classics of sci-fi, with a unique style and a tone that’s far more contemplative than most. However, there are also a lot of people out there who’ve never seen it and have grown up on a diet of bloated sci-fi excess. So how do you appeal to both crowds?

The new trailer does a good job of showing the effort that’s gone into recreating the grimy, holo-ad covered future, as well as that it will further explore how the likes of replicants work (with the help of a blind Jared Leto). It also shows that the scale has grown for those who demand non-stop action.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

‘The film also stars Ana de Armas, Robin Wright, Jared Leto, Barkhad Abdi, Lennie James, Mackenzie Davis, and Sylvia Hoeks.’

The film is due out in early October. [Read more…]

Arrival (Blu-ray Review)

21st March 2017 By Tim Isaac

Starring: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, Mark O’Brien
Directed By: Denis Villeneuve
Running Time: 116 mins
BBFC Certificate: 12
UK Release Date: March 20th 2017

Our Score

It’s very rare for a sci-fi film to get Oscar nominations outside of the technical categories, so it’s truly exceptional that Arrival scored eight of them, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Actress. It may have won just one Academy Award – Best Achievement in Sound Editing – but it’s still highly unusual.

In the movie, the world is shocked when 12 mysterious ovoid spaceships arrive at various points around the planet, hanging in the sky. One of them is over American soil, so the government decides it needs to know what’s going on. Inside the ship are two aliens – which look like a cross between trees and octopuses – but there’s no way to communicate with them. [Read more…]

Denis Villeneuve May Direct New Film Version Of Frank Herbert’s Dune

22nd December 2016 By Tim Isaac

While David Lynch’s 1984 movie version of Dune is defended by some, most prefer to pretend the great director had never made it. However, with Frank Herbert’s books being some of the bestselling hard sci-fi novels ever, Hollywood has long thought they should be able to capitalise on its popularity.

For a while a new movie version has been in the works, and now it may have a director, as Variety reports Denis Villeneuve is in talks to help. The Arrival director seems to be making a bit of a habit of taking on projects where a lot of fans are wary of anyone touching it, as he’s also behind-the-camera for next year’s Blade Runner 2049.

Villeneuve is known to have been keen to make a Dune movie, recently saying, “A longstanding dream of mine is to adapt Dune, but it’s a long process to get the rights, and I don’t think I will succeed.”

However, it now appears he might get his dream after all.

Dune ‘tells the story of Paul Atreides, whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among competing noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control of Arrakis.’

Blade Runner 2049 Announcement Trailer – Deckard & the Replicants are back

19th December 2016 By Tim Isaac

It’s easy to forget now that on its release, Blade Runner was considered a bit of a flop. Since then it’s become one of the defining sci-fi movies of the last 40 years. Even so, when it was revealed a follow-up was in the works, many were uncertain.

And to be honest, I’m not sure this announcement trailer will silence the naysayers. While there are hints towards the original, from neon lighting to Vangelis-style synth strings, its also trying to show it’s something a little bit different – although quite what that difference will be still isn’t clear.

It’s certainly intriguing though, with Ryan Gosling stepping into the central role in a world of humans and replicants. But as you’ve probably guessed, an old face also reappears – Harrison Ford, revisiting his past classic as he did in The Force Awakens and the last Indiana Jones movies.

Here’s the brief synopsis: ‘Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.’
