Will Smith May Be The Genie In Disney’s Live-Action Aladdin

19th April 2017 By Tim Isaac

Recently Will Smith turned down the opportunity to take a major role in Tim Burton’s live-action take on Dumbo. However, it turns out that might have been because he had a different Disney role in mind, as he’s in talks to voice the Genie in the studio’s planned live-action version of Aladdin, according to Deadline.

He’s very early in talks at the moment, so he may end up walking away from the role, as he did with Dumbo, but at the moment he’s the one in the frame. If he does take the role, he’ll have big shoes to fill, as Robin Williams take on the the lamp-living Genie is one of the greatest Disney characters. Although Smith can be good a larger-than-life comedy characters, it’s still a major challenge.

John August is on screenplay duties, with Guy Ritchie set to direct. At the moment, no one has been announced for the title role, although it has been said that after numerous controversy over white-washing in movies in recent years, that Disney is looking a lead actors who have Arabian heritage. We’ll have to wait and see who they choose.

Bright Teaser Trailer – Netflix brings us a Will Smith fantasy crime movie from Suicide Squad’s David Ayer

27th February 2017 By Tim Isaac

Just a few years ago, the idea that Netflix would be bringing us big budget movies with a-list stars would have seemed ludicrous. But this is the year that Amazon’s Manchester By The Sea can win Oscar, and Will Smith is starring in a movie that will debut on Netflix, Bright.

The first trailer for that movie has now arrived. Take a look at it below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set in an alternate present-day where humans, orcs, elves and fairies have been coexisting since the beginning of time, this action-thriller directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad, End of Watch, writer of Training Day) follows two cops from very different backgrounds. Ward, a human (Will Smith), and Jakoby, an orc (Joel Edgerton), embark on a routine night patrol that will alter the future of their world as they know it. Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a young female elf and a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which in the wrong hands could destroy everything.

‘The Netflix original film stars Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, Noomi Rapace, Lucy Fry, Edgar Ramirez, Ike Barinholtz, Enrique Murciano, Jay Hernandez, Andrea Navedo, Veronica Ngo, Alex Meraz, Margaret Cho, Brad William Henke, Dawn Olivieri, and Kenneth Choi. The film is directed by David Ayer and written by Max Landis. David Ayer, Eric Newman, and Bryan Unkeless serve as producers.’

The film will hit Netflix in December. [Read more…]

Will Smith & Tom Hanks Eyed For Tim Burton’s Live-Action Dumbo

12th January 2017 By Tim Isaac

One of the many live-action adaptations of their animated classic that Disney has is the works is Dumbo, which Tim Burton is planning to direct. (And those who aren’t keen on these live-action versions have Burton to blame, as it was the success of his Alice In Wonderland that kicked it all off).

The film is now forward with Variety reporting that Will Smith is circling the movie, while Tom Hanks has been offered a role too. If he signs on Smith, ‘would play the father of the children who develop a friendship with the lovable elephant after seeing him at the circus. Insiders also indicate that Tom Hanks has been offered a role as the villain.’

However, there are major obstacles to them signing on, as Disney wants to shoot this year, so Smith’s involvement would likely need to be scheduled around Bad Boys 3. Hanks meanwhile is weighing up whether to do Dumbo or the World War II drama The Grey Hound.

Suicide Squad – Extended Cut (Blu-ray Review)

4th December 2016 By Tim Isaac

suicide-squad-slideStarring: Will Smith, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto
Directed By: David Ayer
Running Time: 134 mins
BBFC Certificate: 15
UK Release Date: December 5th 2016 (UK)

Our Score

Suicide Squad may have been this year’s most anticipated movie. After the underwhelming Man Of Steel and the ho-hum Batman vs. Superman, the trailers made it look like this was the fun, mischievous shot-in-the-arm that the DC Universe needed to really get it up and running, and a counterpoint to the Marvel movies, but which wouldn’t be as dour as the previous DC films. However, when the reviews came in, it was generally agreed by the critics the movie was a messy misfire (although it did okay at the box office).

Now it’s coming to Blu-ray and VoD in Extended Cut form, which adds in 10-minutes of extra footage. As with the Ultimate Edition of Batman vs. Superman, the extra scenes do help, but they’re unlikely to change anyone’s overall opinion of the movie. [Read more…]

New Collateral Beauty Trailer – Will Smith is forced to confront his grief by a great cast

11th November 2016 By Tim Isaac

collateral-beautyThis one certainly looks like it might be a bit of Oscar-bait from Will Smith and director David Frankel (Dear Diary, The Devil Wears Prada), working with a very impressive cast. It may also be hoping to jerk some tears with its magical realism over the Christmas period.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When a successful New York advertising executive (Will Smith) experiences a deep personal tragedy and retreats from life entirely, his colleagues devise a drastic plan to force him to confront his grief in a surprising and profoundly human way.

‘“Collateral Beauty” features an all-star cast, including Will Smith (“Suicide Squad,” “Concussion”), Edward Norton (“Birdman or [The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance]”), Keira Knightley (“The Imitation Game”), Michael Peña (“The Martian”), Naomie Harris (“Spectre”), Jacob Latimore (“The Maze Runner”), with Oscar winners Kate Winslet (“The Reader,” “Steve Jobs”) and Helen Mirren (“The Queen,” “Trumbo”).’

The movie is set to his UK cinemas on December 26th. Take a look at the trailer below [Read more…]
