Kong: Skull Island Trailer – Tom Hiddleston & Brie Larson find a big ape & a world of monsters

17th November 2016 By Tim Isaac

kong-skull-island-poster1-slideA few months ago we got a Comic Con trailer for Kong: Skull Island, which showed us plenty of things, but not much of the giant ape himself, Kong. However, that’s now been remedied with a new, final trailer, which has much more of the infamous simian, along with a variety of the the other creatures on the island, from gargantuan spiders to strange dinsosaur-like nasties.

You can watch the trailer and see a couple of new posters below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ “Kong: Skull Island” reimagines the origin of the mythic Kong in a compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. In the film, a diverse team of explorers is brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific—as beautiful as it is treacherous—unaware that they’re crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong.

‘“Kong: Skull Island” stars Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Oscar winner Brie Larson, John Goodman and John C. Reilly. The international ensemble cast also includes Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Thomas Mann, Shea Whigham, Toby Kebbell and Eugene Cordero. Vogt-Roberts directs the film from a screenplay by Max Borenstein, John Gatins, Dan Gilroy and Derek Connolly. “Kong: Skull Island” is produced by Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni with Mary Parent. The executive producers are Eric McLeod and Alex Garcia. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures Present a Legendary Pictures Production, “Kong: Skull Island.”

‘The film will be released worldwide in 2D, 3D in select theatres, and IMAX in March 2017, from Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.’ [Read more…]

Kong: Skull Island Comic-Con Trailer – Into the land of the giant apes with Tom Hiddleston & Brie Larson

Oscar-Winner Brie Larson In Early Talks To Play Captain Marvel

2nd June 2016 By Tim Isaac

brie-larsonThere’s been a fair amount of criticism of Marvel Studios for the fact it’s largely concentrated on male superheroes, while refusing to give even popular female characters, such as Black Widow, a movie of her own (Agent Carter got her own TV show, but that didn’t happen until Marvel was almost forced to see the potential, and it certainly wasn’t in cinemas). However, they are planning to at least slightly redress the balance with Captain Marvel.

Different incarnations of the character have been both male and female in the comics, but for the movies they are concentrating on ‘Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. The resulting alteration imbues her with the super powers of strength, energy projection and flight.’

Danvers has been part of The Avengers in the comics, and so should be a good fit as Marvel prepares for a future when the likes of Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth may want to leave the cinematic universe.

Now it seems the studio has found the person they want to play the title character, with THR reporting that Oscar-winning Room actress Brie Larson is in early talks for the role. It’s unclear at the moment how likely it is she will sign on, and it may depend on who the director is, as it appears Marvel is keen to find a female lenser as quickly as they can, with the likes of Niki Caro (Whale Rider) and Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) being near the top of the list.

Captain Marvel is die out March 2019.

Room (DVD Review)

16th May 2016 By Tim Isaac

room-slideStarring: Brie Larson, Jacob Tremblay, Joan Allen, William H Macy, Sean Bridgers
Directed by: Larry Abrahamson
Running time: 118 mins
BBFC Certificate: 15
Release date: May 16th 2016

Our Score

The Best Actress category in this year’s Oscars was very strong. Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence, Charlotte Rampling and Saoirse Ronan all gave powerful, committed performances that were finely-tuned, expressive and thoughtful. All of them however were overshadowed by one towering performance, from Brie Larson in Room. She was the favourite, and probably won it by a country mile. Put simply it’s a performance that you won’t see the like of in a very, very long time.

The room in question is the tiny space where Larson’s Ma is being held captive and raped nightly by Old Nick (a 17th century term for the Devil). The only light is from a skylight, the room itself is a squalid collection of cheap furniture and utilities, just enough to keep her alive – a sink, a bed. Her only companion is her young son Jack (Tremblay), who it transpires was born in this space, and therefore knows nothing else. The only thing that keeps Ma going is her young boy, but obviously their relationship is strained and difficult.

For a good hour of the film the only world we see is the same as Ma and Jack’s, and it’s to director Abrahamson’s enormous credit that he makes it as visually interesting as possible. We see the world through Jack’s eyes – he names his chairs, the furniture and his sad collection of toys, and says good morning to all of them. The huge tension is that he has no knowledge of the existence of the outside world, and thinks his mum is trying to trick him when she tells him of other people, houses and worlds. The only help she gets is when a leaf lands on the skylight and she tries to make Jack understand where it has come from.

Thankfully halfway through the film the pair manage to escape, in a brilliantly staged, heart-stopping sequence, but their problems don’t stop there. After seven years Ma finds the outside world has changed considerably – her parent are divorced, her father can’t cope with the thought of where Jack has come from – clearly he is the product of a rape – and she blames her mother for her abduction.

Room is clearly a tough watch, and at some moments almost forces the viewer to look away, particularly in the rape scenes. What is remarkable though is how Larson’s performance pulls together the story in a wholly thrilling way. Aided by a remarkable script, which teases out information slowly and horrifyingly, Larson’s Ma is quite extraordinary. Her open, frowning face, make-up free and malnourished (Old Nick stops her supply of vitamins as they are ‘too expensive’) is utterly beguiling. There is even a suggestion that she is still breast-feeding her son, perhaps for nourishment, certainly as a form of coping, but her commitment to protecting the only thing she has in the world is utterly compelling.

Yes it’s a tough, sometimes gruelling two hours, but it’s a film that dares to take on a truly horrific subject matter. It’s strangely uplifting, and proves beyond doubt that the Joseph Fritzls and Brian David Mitchells of this world will never win.

Overall verdict: Extraordinary tale of an abduction with a performance from Larson that will burrow its way into your mind and then your heart. She deserved and Oscar and every other award going, and the young Tremblay is almost her equal. Powerhouse stuff.

First Looks At Kong: Skull Island and Valerian & The City Of A Thousand Planets

11th April 2016 By Tim Isaac

valerian-slideThe MTV Movie Awards offered the chance to get our first peak at a couple of highly anticipated new movie, most notably Kong: Skull Island and Luce Besson’s Valerian & The City Of A Thousand Planets.

Oscar-winner Brie Larson takes us to the set of Kong: Skull Island, which focuses on the action and excitement of the film. Tom Hiddleston and Corey Hawkins are also on hand talk up the movie, letting us know that it’s set during the Vietnam era and see a group of adventurers and military getting far more than they bargained for when they arrive on the uncharted Skull Island. It confirms that King Kong will be a bit part of the story, but also that it completely reboots things, as the giant gorilla was never taken to New York and isn’t the last of his kind.

Valerian & The City Of A Thousand Planets meanwhile is based on a classic novel, which as is pointed out in the footage below, helped inspire the likes of Star Wars and Avatar. Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne star in Luc Besson’s film version, which offers up a behind-the-scenes look in the footage below. In the original graphic novel, Valérian and Laureline are 28th Century agents working for the Galaxity organization, whose adventures take them across time and space. However after Galaxity and their home planet disappear, they are left to forge a future on their own. [Read more…]
