High-Rise (Cinema Review)

17th March 2016 By Mike Martin

Directed by: Ben Wheatley

Our Score

When JG Ballard’s novel came out in 1975 it was seen as a savage, and timely, reminder of the failures of modernism. In the 1970s – ask your dad – Britain was indeed a grey, litter-strewn mess of a place, with constant power cuts, a poor standard of living and a housing shortage. The glorious future that was promised by modernist architects, of high-rise apartment blocks with heating, hot water and – joy of joys – indoor toilets (believe it or not readers, I had an outside toilet up until 1982) – had gone horribly wrong. Within a few short years new post-war housing was graffiti-strewn, broken, leaking and in some cases completely abandoned – and it was all the architects’ fault.

The trouble with the film of Ballard’s book – well, the main problem – is its timing. In 1975 tower blocks were indeed misfunctioning nightmares, the lifts broke down, the windows didn’t fit, the flat rooves leaked. Modernism had failed. Now though, technology has caught up, and the basics of Modernism – fresh air, light, space, good lighting – have been proved right. Windows are triple-glazed, rooves don’t leak, floors are scrubbed, bathrooms are white. We’re all modernists now. [Read more…]

Spotlight (Cinema Review)

26th January 2016 By Mike Martin

spotlight-slideStarring: Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo, Liev Schreiber, John Slattery, Stanley Tucci
Directed by: Tom McCarthy
Running time: 128 mins
BBFC Certificate: 15
UK Release Date: January 29th 2016

Our Score

For many, All the President’s Men is the ultimate 70s paranoia movie, the film which inspired a generation of investigative journalists. Now, all these years later, comes a film which in every way is its equal. Spotlight is angry, unbearably tense, brilliantly written and performed, and of course based on a real life scandal, arguably one of the biggest scandals to hit America since the 1970s.

The newsroom in question is the Boston Globe, specifically its special investigations section called Spotlight. Its leader is Michael Keaton, who immediately comes under pressure to deliver a story by new editor Live Schreiber, a peculiar, possibly autistic man but one who is thorough in his job and sees potential in a story about a child abuse case. Keaton agrees to pursue the story with his crack team, including the driven Mark Ruffalo and the sensitive Rachel McAdams. They slowly reveal several cases of abuse of children in the 1970s by Catholic priests, and try to get the victims, now very fragile adults, to reveal their stories. [Read more…]

Dirty Grandpa (Cinema Review)

26th January 2016 By George Elcombe

dirty-grandpa-slideStarring: Robert De Niro, Zac Efron Zoey Deutch, Aubrey Plaza, Dermot Mulroney
Directed By: Dan Mazer
Running Time: 102 mins
BBFC Certificate: 15
UK Release Date: January 28th 2016

Our Score

This film won’t be for everyone’s tastes and ultimately made me question what Robert De Niro is doing with his career. I reviewed this film with the mind-set that it would be another standard American college sex comedy, and as such I was in full American Pie (1999) mode as I watched it. More so expecting a hormonal comedy full of crude jokes, but not involving a personal interaction with a fruit-based dessert.

Dirty Grandpa tells the ‘wholesome’ story of Dick Kelly (De Niro), a recent widower who tricks his grandson, Jason Kelly (Zac Efron), into driving him down to Daytona beach for spring break, so that they can spend some quality family time together and so that Dick can get his end away.

To flesh it out a bit more Jason is uptight, works for a law firm and is about to get married to the wrong woman. As such Dick wants to liberate his oppressed grandson, reinvigorate Jason’s lost free spirit and forgotten desire to be a photographer, but the story doesn’t really matter in a film like this as it is just an excuse to set up lots of bland set pieces and poor jokes. Bad Bromance (The D-Train) (DVD Review)

24th January 2016 By Tim Isaac

bad-bromance-slideStarring: Jack Black, James Marsden, Jeffrey Tambor, Kathryn Hahn, Russell Posner
Directed By: Andrew Mogel, Jarrad Paul
Running Time: 101 mins
BBFC Certificate: 15
UK Release Date: January 18th 2016 (UK)

Our Score

When Bad Bromance (under its original title, The D-Train) first debuted at film festivals, it was met with surprise largely for a single scene, which it appears no one watching was expecting. Indeed, it is perhaps the playing down of that scene that’s contributed to the film making little impact.

Jack Black plays Dan, who’s living a dead-end life in the same town he grew up in. He has no real friends – people actively avoid hanging out with him – and very little to get excited about. He is however the chair of the 20th Anniversary High School reunion committee, but he’s having difficulty getting anyone to attend. [Read more…]

The Visit (Blu-ray Review)

17th January 2016 By Tim Isaac

the-visit-review-slideStarring: Olivia DeJonge, Ed Oxenbould, Deanna Dunagan, Peter McRobbie, Kathryn Hahn
Directed By: M. Night Shyamalan
Running Time: 94 mins
BBFC Certificate: 15
UK Release Date: January 18th 2015 (UK)

Our Score

After a strong start with the likes of The Sixth Sense, M. Night Shyamalan has certainly had an up and down career. With his latest, The Visit, he’s stripped things back to the basics, with a relatively little known cast, low budget and ‘found footage’ premise. However, this being Shyamalan he still has a go at trying to surprise the audience and keep them guessing.

In order for their mother to be able to get away for a much needed break, Becca and her little brother Tyler are sent off to stay with their grandparents for a week – despite the fact they’ve been estranged from their daughter for many years. Becca is an aspiring filmmaker and so plans to document the entire trip on her camera, hopefully finding out what happened between her mother and grandparents along the way. [Read more…]

The Revenant (Cinema Review)

14th January 2016 By George Elcombe

revenant-slieStarring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter
Directed By: Alejandro González Inarritu
Running Time: 156 Minutes
UK Certificate: 15
UK Release Date: 15th January 2016

Our Score

Awards season is yet again upon us, bringing with it the usual ‘tick these boxes in order to get an award’ type films. Not that I think this is a bad thing, as I have previously written that this is the time of year where audiences are treated to some of the best films studios have to offer, and I stand by that.

The Revenant tells the story of Hugh Glass (DiCaprio), a fur huntsman and frontiersman in the 1820’s who is left for dead by his party after a vicious bear attack. His half Native American son is murdered in front of his eyes by fellow hunter John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy) and Glass’s lust for revenge drives his survival against the odds and elements.
