Ready Player One: Spielberg Sizzle Reel – Is the sci-fi the latest classic Spielberg adventure?

23rd January 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Opening with clips of classic Spielberg movies from Jaws and Close Encounters to ET and Jurassic Park, this Sizzle Reel is certainly keen to position Ready Player One as the next great adventure in the director’s long and storied career. It certainly makes the whole thing look pretty intriguing.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.

‘Joining Tye Sheridan (X-Men: Apocalypse, Mud), Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Bates Motel), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One – A Star Wars Story, Bloodline) and T.J. Miller (Deadpool, Silicon Valley), with Simon Pegg (the Star Trek movies, the Mission: Impossible movies) and Oscar winner Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies, Dunkirk) round out the cast. Directed by Spielberg from a screenplay by Zak Penn and Ernest Cline, Ready Player One was produced by Spielberg, Donald De Line, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Dan Farah; with Adam Somner, Daniel Lupi, Chris DeFaria and Bruce Berman as executive producers. The film is slated for release worldwide beginning 30th March, 2018, and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.’ [Read more…]

New Ready Player One Trailer – Steven Spielberg takes us into a sci-fi VR Oasis

10th December 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ready Player One is definitely one of the most intriguing movies of 2018 – a film packed to the brim with references to great films of the past – from King Kong to The Iron Giant to Back To The Future – directed by the great bearded one himself, Steven Spielberg. Now we can take a new look at the film, with a fresh trailer and poster.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. Ready Player One Trailer – The Iron Giant & BTTF DeLorean appear in Steven Spielberg’s reference-heavy world

23rd July 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ready Player One is one of the more intriguing movies of 2018. Ernest Cline’s novel was packed with references to 80s and 90s culture and films, including much of the work of Steven Spielberg. So when the great bearded one announced he was going to direct a movie version, many were intruigued about how they’d incorporate references to films owned by a wide variety of companies – especially as Spielberg said he would be going easy on references to his own films.

Now we’ve got out first look at the movie, and the references are there, including the Back To The Future DeLorean, and The Iron Giant. The last of those Spielberg says is a major part of the movie. It does look pretty cool though, and more ambitious than anything we’ve seen from SPielberg for a while.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From filmmaker Steven Spielberg comes the science fiction action adventure “Ready Player One,” based on Ernest Cline’s bestseller of the same name.

‘Ready Player One is in cinemas March 30, 2018 and stars Tye Sheridan (“X-Men: Apocalypse,” “Mud”), Olivia Cooke (“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,” “Bates Motel”), Ben Mendelsohn (“Rogue One – A Star Wars Story,” “Bloodline”) and T.J. Miller (“Deadpool,” “Silicon Valley”), with Simon Pegg (the “Star Trek” movies, the “Mission: Impossible” movies) and Oscar winner Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies,” upcoming “Dunkirk”).

Star Trek Beyond (Cinema Review)

21st July 2016 By George Elcombe Leave a Comment

star-trek-beyondStarring: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Idris Elba, Simon Pegg
Directed By: Justin Lin
Running Time: 120 Minutes
Certificate: 12A
UK Release Date: 22nd July 2016

Our Score

Star Trek Beyond marks the 50th anniversary of the franchise and is the third instalment of the rebooted film series, this time directed by Justin Lin and co-written by Scotty himself, Simon Pegg.

Like many I had my doubts when Paramount announced they were going to retell the origins of the original series crew on the big screen, but I am pleased at how they have rebooted this franchise by creating an alternate timeline which respects and acknowledges all that came before and left a blank canvas for new crew. One thing J.J. Abrams injected into the reboot was a sense of fun and adventure akin to Indiana Jones or Star Wars, which this film also has bucket loads and isn’t a problem for this fan. Simon Pegg Up For Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One

20th March 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

simon-peggThe cast of Spielberg’s Ready Player One continues to grow, with THR reporting that Simon Pegg has signed up for the movie. He joins Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn and Tye Sheridan, who’s set to be the lead character of Wade Watts.

The movie will be based on Ernie Cline’s novel. Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade’s devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world’s digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator’s obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade’s going to survive, he’ll have to win—and confront the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.’

Pegg is in talks to play Ogden Morrow, the co-creator of OASIS. The film should be in cinemas December 15th, 2017, with shooting expected to start in the next few months.
