The Dark Tower (Blu-ray Review)

11th December 2017 By Tim Isaac

Starring: Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Taylor, Jackie Earle Haley, Katheryn Winnick
Directed By: Nikolaj Arcel
Running Time: 95 mins
BBFC Certificate: 12
UK Release Date: December 11th 2017 (UK)

Our Score

It’s a movie 10-years in the making (at least this attempt took 10 year), but when it arrived in cinemas The Dark Tower was met with negative reviews and muted box office. It currently has a pretty abysmal 16% on RottenTomatoes and just 5.9/10 from viewers on IMDB. So is it really that bad? No, it’s not, but its easy to understand why it’s had such bad reactions.

The film focuses on teenager Jake (Tom Taylor), who’s been having strange visions of a giant tower at the centre of the universe and the ‘Man In Black’ (Matthew McConaughey), who’s determined to destroy it. While those around him are beginning to think Jake is becoming unhinged, the teen discovers what he’s been seeing is real. [Read more…]

Thor: Ragnarok (Cinema Review)

24th October 2017 By George Elcombe

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum
Directed By: Taika Waititi
Running Time: 130 Minutes
UK Release Date: 23 October 2017
BBFC Certificate: 12A

Our Score

I have absolutely no problem with Disney churning out Marvel (or Star Wars) films as long as the quality is up to scratch. Thankfully, they are indeed on point with this third and possibly final Thor movie.

Thor: Ragnarok is set two years after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) – although that film’s events seemed more like a week rather than an age – and our hero Thor, the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth), is forewarned about Ragnarok: a prophecy that spells the destruction of his homeland of Asgard. Being in a plane crash would suck. However, if you get have to crash and then get stranded, being trapped with Idris Elba or Kate Winslet might make it a little more entertaining. However, neither of them seem to be having a lot of fun in the trailer for The Mountain Between Us.

Star Trek Beyond (Cinema Review)

21st July 2016 By George Elcombe

star-trek-beyondStarring: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Idris Elba, Simon Pegg
Directed By: Justin Lin
Running Time: 120 Minutes
Certificate: 12A
UK Release Date: 22nd July 2016

Our Score

Star Trek Beyond marks the 50th anniversary of the franchise and is the third instalment of the rebooted film series, this time directed by Justin Lin and co-written by Scotty himself, Simon Pegg.

Like many I had my doubts when Paramount announced they were going to retell the origins of the original series crew on the big screen, but I am pleased at how they have rebooted this franchise by creating an alternate timeline which respects and acknowledges all that came before and left a blank canvas for new crew. One thing J.J. Abrams injected into the reboot was a sense of fun and adventure akin to Indiana Jones or Star Wars, which this film also has bucket loads and isn’t a problem for this fan.
